Nabbed yote #4 today... Outside our black one, this was the prettiest one we've caught so far with a real fluffy feel to her fur.

    Approaching the set:

We ALMOST got her to bark at us a bit:

Greg, what's the breakdown males to females? Noticed you called this one "her".

Kendall, I'm starting to become more and more intrigued by this breakdown... almost all of the animals I trap are females, it seems.

Last year, we caught two 'cats -- both of which were female. The gray and red from last year were females, too.

The red fox we caught right off the bat was a female, as was the first gray. Only the second gray was a male, and all four yotes have been females.

    Both coons, conversely, were boars.

    Interesting stuff.

Greg I love these posts....especially with your son in the pics. I don't know anything about trapping. How-where do you shoot them? I assume it doesn't bother your son at all?

Todd, thanks so much for the kind words!

No, he was participating in field-dressing deer by the age of 3, and while he did gag once at that age, he turned right back around and stuck his head right back in the middle of things, LOL!

He understands that dispatching an animal is just part of good conservation practice and part of the process. Like me, he doesn't want to see an animla unduly suffer ... but he has no problem with a quick, humane dispatch. In fact, he's the one that after a few minutes of taking pictures has said, "OK Dad.. let's put it down."

He's an amazing boy, and I'm so happy with how I'm being able to raise him and how he's turning out.

Just thinking some more about your question... you've got to realize what kind of house he's been (being) raised in... He was drawing an imaginary bow and trying to shoot the t.v. screen when Bambi came on when he was 3. :)

Good stuff Greg. Since I don't have kids I corrupted my nephews. To this day they refer to deer as 'nummies' (as in nummy to your tummy) heh heh.

I've never done enough canine trapping to pay attention the sex ratios of the foxes I caught. I do remember that the majority of the 'coons that I caught were male. Like 5 to 1.

Congrats! You must have a ton of coyotes in your area. From your hunting experiences, did you have any idea there were this many around?

You're doing the deer and small game in your area a big favor by removing all of those predators. Neat pics!:)

Unfortunately, to answer your question specifically ... I don't trap where I hunt. I can tell you I see a good number of deer in the mornings, and there's one heckuva turkey flock in the area.

In fact, I had a few turkeys within about 20 yards of one of my yotes I trapped last week... they were moving through kinda fast as we approached the set so I couldn't get any really good pics of them, but it was kinda neat any way.

But I gotta agree: This should really help out the game animals next year, and I'm hoping to see a larger population of red fox next year as well if I can keep thinning out these yotes.

Very cool! Seems like you have a predator problem down there. That boy of yours is
going to be one heck of a outdoorsman for sure.

Wow, she's a beauty. Glad to see you're investing these experiences in your boy. He'll benefit a lot from it, not to mention how much respect he'll develope for wildlife.
