I'd like to see a breakdown on where that money came from (i.e. bowls, Big Ten Network, sponsors, etc.) I'm sure Notre Dame makes more off other stuff as well. Just want to make sure we are talking apples to apples.
I'm going off what I read on the net and what the guys on the nc coverage were saying Monday night (that the SEC had, by far, the best TV deal). I don't really give a rat's ass. I'm sure you can cook the books many, many ways. I was just passing along info..
Not sure how accurate it is but here is some stats I found about 2010 conference tv revenue. http://www.secsportsfan.com/2010-tv-revenue-per-conference.html
Yeah I think it's feeble for the author of the article to write a story with that message. I also think it's feeble to chant SEC at a NC game when ONLY LSU won.... and to post this...... http://forums.bowhunting.com/showthread.php?t=18806 and this... http://forums.bowhunting.com/showthread.php?t=18726 I've been pretty clear from the start on my criticism. I'm very curious and can't wait to hear why you understand why I (we) feel this way.
The reason this does not surprise me Phillip is I'm guessing that has the complete BTN revenue built in. Keep in mind. The Big Ten is broadcasting 24 hours a day 7 days a week on their own network. That revenue is bound to start adding up.
Here's an article about the SEC/ESPN tv deal http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/news/story?id=3553033 SEC/CBS deal http://www.sportsbusinessjournal.com/article/59762 Big Ten/ABC(ESPN) deal http://www.sportsbusinessjournal.com/article/58254
Here's another interesting article I just found on conference and tv deals http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/stewart_mandel/07/24/tv-deals/index.html
We could beat this to death (probably already have) but I have one final thought. The only reasonable argument I've heard about the reason SEC fans do this is because of better TV contracts and better recruiting. I'll argue that the SEC did not get those contracts and don't get the recruits because their fans are (using Jeff's lingo) classless. They got those contracts and recruits because they apparently have the best teams year in and year out. College football is king in the South. Coincidence? I think not. I really think it is that simply.
Only reasonable argument in your opinion. I love it when the ACC kicks ass across the country in BB. It bodes well for the conference. The Big East / ACC Challenge is awesome. I pull for "most" ACC teams when its' played. Do you think Buckeye's rooting for FSU over MSU? I doubt it.
So it is a pride thing rather than trying to prove something or gain something? Quite possibly this is becoming clearer to me. Edit: Not sure about Buckeye..... But I would not take pride if MSU beat FSU or vice versa. If OSU would of played and beat Auburn in the NC I would not of taken pride in that at all. I guess that is the difference between Midwest and South East fans.
If you speak for all the midwest fans........"maybe". It's like having a little brother. YOU can pick on him all you wnan to. But, you'd defend him with everything you had.....if outsiders tried it. That's close. And..."Take pride" is your phrase. I'd just rather an ACC BB team won v. a Big 10 team. There's no pride involved.
I'm asking because I don't know and I'm curious. Does this mentality translate over to pro teams generally in the south? Will you be cheering for Atlanta to beat the Packers this weekend? The same people who chant SEC and post these threads, will they typically be cheering for Atlanta? If it does not translate to pro teams....... why only college sports?
Most southern fans do not care as much for the NFL and are not as passionate about it as they are college. For me personally since the Titans didnt make it, I was hoping to see a Colts/Falcons SuperBowl. I like Manning (obviously) and was a Falcon fan until Tennesse got a team. If its not the Titans, I couldn't care less who wins the Super Bowl.
Does it translate over into pro teams? Well.....yeah. I root for the AL over the NL most times. And, that has nothing to do with geography (obviously). I'll root for an American hockey team over a Canadian Hockey team. I root for the USA in the Olympics (that's not so cut and dried....in case someone goes there). Some people are AFC fans (in addition to having a favorite team.....or when speaking of inter-league play). I'm not sure why you think this kinda stuff is rare.
I think your stance in regard to the basketball ACC conference is fine. I don't think that is rare at all. I can understand that 100%. Be frank Jeff that is not the circumstances we have been discussing. You agreed it is classless when fans do it. I don’t see fans engaging in this behavior in any other sport or in any other region. That is what makes it rare. A few years ago the ACC was the dominate conference in CBB. I never once witnesses one occurrence with this type of behavior. And that includes the ACC/B10 challenge. The ACC beat up on the Big ten and won championships without all this conference crap. I'm trying to grasp "the why" on the feeble dialog that seems to be so prevalent in the SEC culture. Examples have been stated. Why is the question
honestly, I think its cuz they frankly do not have a whole lot else to crow about... except maybe good bass fishing...
I'm wondering why it bothers you so much? Why have you tried pointing it out so much. It is a valid point so why hate that the point is made? Kentucky will never be a great football team....You want to know why? Because of their conference. They have the money, they have the fans, they have every puzzle piece seemingly....but they are at the bottom of the SEC....sure they have made improvements, but they will never break through....because they are competing against Florida, Bama, LSU, Auburn and other powerhouses every year...Sure, we knock off maybe one of them a year....but get creamed the rest of the time. We finished 10th in our conference and still made a bowl game (5th straight year at that)....That says something. That said, I'm a casual college football fan. I have the same mindset as Jeff takes with Basketball....Bitter rivals I want to lose, (which is why I hope the Vols never win another game), but as for the rest of the group, I'd rather see an SEC team win as it makes our bottom of the barrel status within conference a little easier pill to swallow.
