here's an interesting article I found http://www.gatorsports.com/article/...1044?Title=SEC-will-continue-to-reign-supreme Don't worry, I don't like Pat Dooley at all. He is a terrible journalist and recently made a classless comment about Frank Beamer (whom we all know is one of the most respected coaches in America). But I found the article entertaining and true.
I think we covered this pretty well here http://forums.bowhunting.com/showthread.php?t=18726 As I said over there......... who cares? I cheer for a team not a conference.
Not true. We all know the SEC is the deepest conference in football. Well known fact. Not to be disputed. But, the attitude and conceit in which he writes, he sounds like an ass.
I agree the SEC is a great conference, I do not agree that no other conference has a chance of winning NC's other than the SEC though.
He didn't say no other conference has a chance at a NC. He said no other conference has a chance of winning 5 straight as the SEC has. Still waiting for why it matters.
Read between the lines.... "Because we'll be there. We'll be in New Orleans for the national title. First, we have to slug it out for 14 Saturdays. Then we'll figure out which team to send to win a sixth straight national championship. "You may be on top now, but it's cyclical." Cyclical? Then why has no conference ever done what the SEC has done over the last five years? The question has been asked on talk radio this week — what conference has a chance to win five straight titles with four different teams. I've heard the answer that the new Big Ten could be that conference. But for the Big Ten to win five straight it first has to win one in a row. And hope that the SEC comes down with food poisoning that lasts four months."
If you just leave emotion out of it.....what part do you have a problem with? Pretty much everything he says is supported by facts/recent history. He's an SEC homer. (not that it's a bad thing, lately). Let him puff his chest out. In the end, we'll all see if he's right.
Okay.... yeah I agree he thinks the SEC will win the next 498 MNC. Agreed. Let me put it another way........ Next September I am going to be saying Go Badgers Buckeye will be saying Go Bucks Hooker will be saying Go LSU Phillip will be saying Go Vols Germ and Vito will be saying Go Blue etc etc etc None of those people will be saying Go SEC or Go Big Ten. And if someone is saying Go SEC or Go Big Ten.... WHY? I've never met a person to do this. I'll say it. SEC is greatest conference of all time. I don't care. I care that the Badgers lost the Rose Bowl. I don't get it.
I'm a Duke basketball fan. Other than UNC and MD.....I'll pull for an ACC team against any other school in basketball......any time of the year. So you're saying I can't be an ACC fan? Sue me.
I agree with this. I said before I don't like him as a journalist, because he's an elitist. But everything he says within the article is true. To answer the question why are some SEC fans like this? Because it gives their team more credibility, even if they didn't win the NC.
Perfect example...... A writer that apparently covers Florida is puffing out his chest when his team had a poor (by Florida's standards) year. Again, I don't understand the thought process. Other SEC teams can be proud of a good season but Auburn is the only team that should be puffing out their chest. How does a Florida writer get to brag about something another team did?
Didn't say you could not be a fan of a conference. My point is that amount of energy that is wasted on trying to prove one conference is better than another is a joke. For heavens sake after LSU won the NC the crowd was chanting "SEC". Shouldn't they of been chanting LSU?
Yeah...but the smoke's settled a little, now. You have to understand.....conference bragging rights is great for recruitment. It's great for TV $$. WOuld you ever catch me shouting "ACC", after a Ga Tech. BB nc? No way. Would I contend in June that they're the best BB conference in the nation (assuming they were)? You bet. I'm also not a journalist.
Let me make sure I am getting this right. They are trying to give their team more creditability by thumping their chest that they lost to better teams? Sounds like some seriously repugnant rationalization going on. The whole college football thing is so subjective and this is the result. Here is a thought.... how about beat the teams you play instead of trying to live off your competition's accomplishments.
Noter Dame has the single most lucrative TV contract and they don't belong to any conference. They are living off their own past accomplishments. As a caveat, they better get the shipped turned around. They can't live in the past forever. BYU is going independent because they could get a better deal.
