This year has SUCKED for me so far. Heading into this afternoons hunt I had only seen 6 deer all year, and they all came on last Friday's hunt. I almost stayed home tonight, and then I read buckeye and rybo's success threads and sucked it up and headed out. I decided to get away from the standing corn and get into a spot that I usually reserve for November. I am after 2 particular bucks. One is a 3.5 year old 10 point whom I have on video last year walking right underneath me and I saw him this year eating acrons about a week before season started. He has been nicknamed "Benchpress". The other was a STUD 10 pointer last year as a 3.5 year old. He was never seen while hunting, but I saw him once driving out, and my dad saw him twice. We found his sheds and he scored in the 150's with an 18 inch spread. I carried a hang on and sticks in and with the SW wind it was a perfect night. I was setup and ready at 3:30, not really expecting much to happen. At 5:00 I glanced up and saw a deer headed my way. I grabbed the binos and it was a buck, but only a 3 point. He walked right by me at 10 yards...not a care in the world. Shooting light was starting to fade and I was just about ready to start packing up. I heard a bunch of leaves wrestling and glanced over and saw 3 does running at a good pace right at me. I drew back on the lead doe and then caught more movement....and here HE came. It's the big 10 point whom we have the sheds of, and he was coming RIGHT AT ME. I got ready, and was suprisingly not nervous. He had closed within 40 yards, but was head on to me and he took off towards the does who were about 20 yards past at this point. I tried everything to get him to stop. I yelled, whistled, bleated. Anything in the woods would of sworn a drunk Indian was in that stand. All I could do was sit there at full draw and watch the buck trot right by me at 10 yards and down over the hillside after the does. A hell of an encounter, and definantly the pick me up I needed.
Wow, cool encounter. Can't believe he didn't stop when you yelled. He can't have them does that much on his mind this early, can he? Good luck with him, sounds like a stud!
I'm guessing that maybe I spooked one of the does when I tried to get him to stop and when they took off he picked the pace up. I wasn't going to take that shot on him trotting along like he was.
Here is a pic of the sheds that we found. Notice that his right G-2 was broken off. When we scored him we put the same measurement as his left G-2.
Seems like alot of guys are having encounters like this lately. Gets the blood pumpinng. Good luck on him.
That'll kick start the motivation. It's tough when they won't stop for nothing, but at least you know you didn't spook him.
