Doyle approves hunting by 10-year-olds, with mentors

    .
Madison - Wisconsin residents age 10 and up can go hunting with mentors starting next month without taking a safety course beforehand.
Gov. Jim Doyle on Thursday signed a bill supporters say preserves the state's hunting culture by making it easier for youngsters and others to participate.
Under the new mentorship program, youngsters 10 and older can go out with an adult who has a hunting license to "test drive" the sport. The child and adult can have only one gun or bow between them and must stay within arm's reach of one another.
Supporters say the program will get more young hunters involved and allow more people from urban areas to try hunting. Previously, Wisconsin's minimum hunting age was 12.

Thats good news, my only concern was the fact that the adult mentor can be 18 years old, I wish this age would be higher to at least 21.

i like this, but not as much as my 10 year old son...He can't wait..he's been shooting 3 days a week and coming along quite nicely...he will be taking hunter safety next year but he doesn't need it for this....i'm looking forward to early mornings and late evenings in the stand with him....

Indiana passed a similar apprentice license program last year, it's been a godsend for recruitment. Our kids have to hunt with a mentor also, which is how it should be anyway. Once they reach 12 they can take an online HE course to get their youth license, at which time they can hunt alone if they wish, the youth license is renewable to age 18.

Is this the same Jim Doyle who won't sign off on CCW?

Would be great news, but I'm afraid as liberal as our state has become, we'll end up with another just like him.

I know what you are saying Dan, but there is NO way we could do any worse than Doyle. Nobody in the history of the state sold his soul more to the special interest groups and lied as much as Doyle. Anyone would be better. Remember the old saying; “You can only go up from here”.

And yes it is confirmed he is not running.
