Howdy Y'all! Thanks for stopping by. I've been counting down the days to this weekend and it has finally made it. Now, I head out west tomorrow morning, before I get to the trip let me tell you a little about myself, for those who don't know. My name is Kyle, I am a college student living in the land of the giants, Kansas. My main property is roughly 2 and 1/2 hours from where I live at school. I haven't been able to make it out a ton this year, but I've been testing the waters of public hunting. Well this far I've been unable to connect with a doe, I've only had 3 or so sits this year. Made it back home to check the cameras and fill the feeder tonight before leaving town in the morning. Just a recap, my buddy stuck this guy last year. The one I shot jumped the river and was never found Well like I said I made it out to my land today. A lot of things are coming together out there. If I connect out west early I may be able to make it home early for a hunt or two. I'll discuss the trip later on, here is what I saw: So that's fun and give me something to look forward to! Besides that, let's get this weekend started. Tomorrow morning I head out to north west Kansas. I'm meeting with a farmer to have him show me a few options. I've been in touch with about 5 or 6 different landowners who I know through different people, and I have two spots (roughly 1000 acres) I'm really focusing on. The first has a creek running through it, and the owner says he shoots big Muleys and whitetails off of it. It's mostly all pasture land. The next is a section I just found out about today. I'm not sure about the actual boundaries until I'm out there, but I know the corn was taken out last week and that there are a ton of big ones around! Tomorrow we will set up camp and get stands hung for the first evening sit. It'll be a fun time with a lot of scouting. We will be out there until Tuesday afternoon or evening. It'll be a long camp, but well worth it I'm sure. I'll continue posing updates, service permitting. But this should be fun so I'll do my best to keep you all updated as I go! Kyle
Headed out this morning. Just about an hour and a half out. We are going to check out the two main areas first and call a local farmer when we first get there. While we wait for him we will check out a couple other tracts and decide where to set up camp. Hope to be in a tree tonight!
Hope you get a BIG one! let me know how things go with the antlerless doe season this weekend... should makes things interesting.
Kill Kyle Kill!!! Good luck buddy Oh and if ya need me to I am available to go down and keep an eye on those big boys for ya this weekend
Well here's an update for y'all. Bare with me as service is terrible out here. Yesterday we checked out 2 properties and elected to set up camp at the second, our original plan. The three of us split up and hung 2 stands and a ground blind. The first thing I did at camp was run over and bend one of my lone wolf sticks, so that's unlucky. Good thing I have 3 others! It was a little late by the time we got done hanging stands yesterday. About 5 I clock. I did kick 2-3 does out of bed about 20-30 yards west of my stand set up in the creek bed. Driving around last night we saw 10-15 does and two bucks. The first was one the other side of the property (the entire half section we have permission for) and the second was 200 yards across the road of the 1/4 section we don't have permission to hunt (maybe WIHA?). This second was a 180+" Muley. My set up today is in a tree line with a dried up creek running through it. Good signs of deer. CRP 50 yards north and it looks like milo about 200 yards away across the trees, creek, and fence. Hit stand today about 6 am. Cattle all around until shortly after 7. I saw three does running across the CRP about 300 yards out towards the milo. One buddy just got down to drive around. I'll hunt until about 10:30, another hour, before I go scouting. I'm going to get my trail cam out by my stand. My plan today is to map out the entire section I'm hunting. I have permission for 3/4 of it, but I'm going to see if the other 1/4 is WIHA. I'd like to get an idea of what crops are planted where for the fields surrounding the property. I'm going to bring out the glass this afternoon and try to put a stalk on. The owner says I'm in the right spot but I'd love to see something close. Tonight my plan is to sit on the edge of a huge bluff in the middle of the field. Up the hill is wheat stubble down it is the crp I see. Might be able to find out where they cross over into the milo. We will see how it goes, hopefully we will get on them.
Thanks! But yeah right I may have to go home early and hunt a time or two before going back to school if things don't work out, out here.
Well I sat on that bluff last night, saw about 6 different bucks through the milo. I sat there again this morning until 9 am. Saw 5 bucks (I believe 4 whitetails) and 3 or so does. I switched over to my stand and will be here until shortly after 11. Then I'm taking it down and going to move north where it looks like they cross the property line to and from the milo. Hopefully I'll cut one off tonight!
