Rifle kill......but I wanted to share briefly anyway. I parted ways with my hunting bow about a month ago, I've barely been hunting since and when I do, I take the rifle. Anyway, pulled an all nighter last night for absolutely no reason at all, except I just didn't feel like going to sleep. SO about 6:15 I get dressed and make the 8 minute walk from my back door to my treestand. I get settled in nice and quietly and began to wait. I had zero action (I haven't seen a single deer behind my house in 7 hunts) until this guy hobbled in with a doe about 8:15. It appears he has been shot with a bow in the shoulder knuckle. The wound is pretty gross, it has his leg all busted up, but he seemed fairly healthy. Pretty skinny and had a pretty bad limp but overall, he seemed healthy. I think he PROBABLY would have made it, no way of knowing, but it HAD to have been bothering him badly. 60yds, .270, quartering away, and I smoked him. He made it all of 40yds before piling up. I'm as happy as can be, an excellent way to end my season with less than 10 days left. I didn't think I could beat the year I had last year, but this year has far surpassed it. This is my 12th deer in two years between 2 states. I know everyone says it, but I have hunted harder these past two years than I have in all my other years combined. Kills aren't just given to you Thanks guys, I hope you all have a happy new year. Entrance, he was slightly quartering away. ANd the archery wound. His leg is beyond messed up guys, you'd just have to see it in person.
Congratulation's Matt!! Looks as though he had some good stickers on the base of his antlers to rip up some tree's.
Thanks guys, couldn't think of a better way to end the season. Technically I have another buck tag, IF I want to use it. I have 7 more days, I might go, just to get out. We'll see.
Congrats! Did you process him yourself? (curious what the meat and bone looked like on the injured side)
Congrats on the buck. He's got some cool looking junk going on at his bases. That wound looks pretty infected, I don't know that he would have recovered from that, but they are some tough animals. I think you did the right thing taking him.
