You guys realize it does not replace the basic and you are not suppose to solve the math problem. It's about finding out what Jack did wrong. Problem solving Where does it say that the displayed number line is a Common Core formula?...no where. This activity is about reading instructions, following directions and analyzing something.
Every year I walked into my children's schools and spoke with not only the principal, but everyone of their teachers. They were all instructed that if my children had any problems in the class learning the curriculum or with behavior, I was to be informed of the issue so that we could get my children back on track. The trick to making sure the children are taught correctly is to take an active role in their education.
Continually changing teaching tactics to make it easier doesn't help anything though if the kids can't even do basic problems, math in this case. Not talking about this in particular but having to look up common core to see what it is and seeing examples of problems and how to solve them. A perfectly good example of this is a old job I used to have. As part of the application process you had to do 50 basic math problems without a calculator. Adding, subtracting, multiplication, and division. 50 problems in 5 minutes, either get 30/50 right or if only did 30 all had to be correct. You would not believe how many people's applications got thrown out because they failed this task. You take a calculator away from a lot of people younger than me and they're lost. (I'm 30)
I have 2 kids in college, 1 of whom is getting ready for graduate school. All told me the same thing, I wish I would have listened to you. I have post graduate level physics (please ignore the 'carpenter' and other stuff in my dialogues, take to long to explain), and watching my children STRUGGLE in math and physics because of political correctness has raised my blood pressure 20 points. And it is not just in the hard sciences! My son was taught spanish in texas by a Puerto Rican. No big deal. Except it seems PRs pronounce their spanish 'j's as a 'j' instead of as the 'y' in latin american spanish. ALL his class failed. What a collosal closter f. Our desire to be liked and accepted by others has serously clouded our common sense.
