I saw this on the link in the Laugh of the day thread and it hit home

I am constantly getting into it with my daughters teacher over this kinda crap. She will have the correct answer but the teacher doesn't like the way I helped her get there. K.I.S.S.!!!!! Crazy some of the BS they teach on some topics. Last month I had a 30 min argument with her teacher over moon phases.... they were told to check the moon each night for a month and record what they saw, I took the opportunity to teach my daughter all about moon phase, waxing vs waning, gibbous, crescent, new, full etc. She got a low score for using those terms????? REALLY I was blown away, Her teacher told me that wasn't part of the assignment, they were only supposed to record what they saw... I SAID THAT IS WHAT SHE SAW HEEEELLLLLOOO

Anyone else have teacher frustrations at times?

I feel your pain my daughters teacher during the last election was only teaching the Democrats position and how great Obama was. I put an end to that with a meeting with her and the principal and 10 other parents who all agreed that you have to teach both sides of the coin or none of it. She was just pushing an agenda of the school board or the state I don't know for sure which one but we as parents have to keep an eye on what the schools are teaching.

Yes, it is very difficult to help with math. The way they teach math now makes it nearly impossible for parents to help their kids with homework. I can help my daughter with her homework and she gets the correct answers, but then gets in trouble because she didn't do it the way they teach it at school...and she even thinks the "old fashioned" way is easier. I don't get it. I am going to have to go back to school to learn the new way of math just to help my daughter with her work. It is very frustrating!

My daughter doesn't even have a text book for Math. It's all classroom work, then a worksheet. I have no F'n clue how to help her without the textbook to reference because it's all bs math. It's not real math. Add, subtract, multiply and divide. I have a college degree in education, you'd think I'd be able to figure it out. Most of the time I just have to tell her I have no clue, we didn't do math like that when I was in school.

OMG that parent is an idiot, my son solved this problem in his head and he's eight.

It's pretty simple, Jack counted back from 127 with 1 six times. It's not new math, it's logic.

    It's called problem solving skills.

Hell common core even made Kentucky smarter.

LOL yes I am aware of how the problem works, it was purely an example of how things have changed in our schools, and how at times it can be frustrating for an idiot parent like myself...

I was talking about the parent who is supposed to be an engineer and counted back from 127 by 10 6 times. I hear speeches on Common Core all the time, my wife gets invited to Michigan conference in Lansing to speak on common core.

I know, I understand common core, it just seems to me that the way we were taught is so much simpler, but then again IT IS how WE were taught lol, It isn't really the math that irks me so much, there are a multitude of things in her homework that drive me crazy.

This more about problem solving/logic than math.

Can you explain how implementing common core math and English in 2010 can increase the graduation rate only 3 years later? Test scores went up a whopping 2%, probably because the teachers are teaching the test!!!! 3 years is not nearly a large enough sample size. The kids that are starting out learning common core haven't even made it to junior high yet.

    Ask Sarah Butrymowicz:wave:

I will ask my wife tonight, she has a very in-depth understanding of the common core and how it works. I'll shoot you a PM this weekend.

So we change how we teach to fit the minority instead of the majority?

They need to keep the political out of the common core approach if that is the direction they are going to take.

But simple math problems should be taught as such, ,simple.

    Ah what he said.

I don't care how they teach crap as long as these idiots goin out into the world have some kinda of basic knowledge. When I gotta tell some idiot they've gave me the wrong change twice and haveta get a manager involved because that's what the register says is right. There a problem somewhere.

I do think it serves a purpose and in some ways I like they way it makes one think... however it should not replace the basics..
