My wife used to hold year round fundraisers for her hs bball team. They were self sufficient and did not have to ask the school boosters for a single cent. Those girls washed cars, sold items, and ran basketball camps.

They work the stores around here. See them outside the grocery stores all the time for one team or another.

They do car washes around here and sell baked goods at the grocery stores and at the games. Sometimes the baked goods are pretty good and the car washes are pretty decent. A service station will donate space and water.

Wow that is the epitome of lazy right there - panhandling to raise money just doesn't sit right with me.

People up here tend to have a stronger work ethic than that...

I've seen kids from a little league "all star team" actually go door to door to businesses and houses dressed in their uniform asking for money. Ridiculous if you ask me! Parents shouldnt' allow it or be a part of it IMO. I have a high school golf team that plays their home matches and practices at my golf course. In April when we open they all have a rake in their hands and garbage bags. They spend a couple weekends picking up trash and helping to clean up the course in the spring. I'll throw some hamburgers and hot dogs on the grill or order some pizzas. Make it a fun day as well as educational. Parents think its the greatest thing ever. Then I dont' charge the school for them playing here.

Firemen do that all the time here. Not in the city, small towns. Vfd's have to make money somehow. So is it ok for fire departments but not kids sports teams?

Who said it's ok for fire departments to do it? Did you just convince yourself of that? The departments I know of around here have chicken BBQ's, car washes, golf tournaments, etc.... they don't stick their hand out or knock on doors saying give me money. That whole concept is disgusting if you ask me.

The two fire departments in my immediate area put on a dance, put on a feed or two and do raffles to raise money.

I was asking the question if its ok. I didnt convince myself of anything. It is a VERY common practice where I live.
Boot drives (standing there asking for money)
    Gun bashes
street fair/carnivals (fire dept's typically have a chuck-a-luck booth or a beer booth)
    fish fries
    Pancake breakfasts or spagetti dinners
These are all typical things I see that VFD's use to generate money.

While we are on the topic of asking for money, there was a christian group of women that stood on the intersections in town collecting money to put on halloween & christmas parades for the children of the town. It was a very popular event for the kids of the town. Do they get a pass because they were "good christian folk doing it all for the children?"

I'm less harsh for people "begging" if it goes towards charitable services. The money is going to some type of service.

LL teams are not a charitable service.

You're investing in the youth of America. We all benefit from that. Pretty good "charity" imo

I'm with you on the begging, but it is a valuable cause.
