Man let me tell you we had a ball, we hunted the backside of my familys mountain where a creek and roadbed run thru to ol'man nesters cow pasture, back off on a ridge we baited about a month ago they'd been scratching and feeding there so we went in set up a natural blind with a lil'camo netting a few days ago just on the side of some laurels we got in there bout 6 a.m. got set up started calling just at day break and man let me tell you when i heard them gobbles and them hens a yelping my heart soared we never got anything to come in but thats b/c we set up to far off the roost and when they came down they headed to feed in ol'man nesters pasture my son was asleep holding the shotgun.the next micheal waddell (ha-ha) poor fella was to early in the morning for him.we took him to the house bout mid -day and went scouting the other side of the mountain where we had seen birds feeding several times not one gobble or yelp so believe we'll just go set up at the end of the road bed opening day and maybe well take ol'tom home but ladies and gents it sure felt good to be hunting again how was your youth day ?
We had an amazing youth weekend as well. My hunting partner Jarrod and I took out a little boy this morning, rain and other hunters busted a slam dunk roost setup (one on the limb 150 yds out, another coming in hard across field in full strut). I had to leave town to celebrate my fathers birthday but Jarrod and Jackson finished the day out and a few hours later Jackson put the smack down on a nice gobbler (same two birds came in at a later setup). Other Team Covert members helped out with a local NWTF Chapter Jake's Day youth hunt by taking out 6 kids. All six tagged a tom, 4 of which on film (with a miss thrown in to boot), and one of the birds was a silver/orange color phased gobbler. We went 7 for 7 today, and I was sadly out of town for the bulk of the day. Excited for the kids that called me with the stories though!
Glad to hear of your sucess's and near misses! Sounds like a great time. We still a few weeks here in Idaho. Opening day I plan on being behind my ol' man with my camera running.
thanx fellas aint it great to be back in the woods listening to the wrens and crows and woodpeckers and then that gobble comes and your heart says yes sir come on in ol'boy
anytime out in the woods is a great time. Glad to see you had an eventful day. good luck if you go back out.
I had a close call with the kid I took out today. About an hour after the birds flew off the roost we had a group of 8 jakes roll through at about 20 yards, but unfortunately the way the blind was set up the kid couldn't get a shot because he'd have to reach his barrel across his Dad, which would leave the muzzle much to close to his ears. Overall we probably had about 15-20 birds gobbling while on roost, and it was a great time. However, I'm catchin up on sleep, and my Dad is taking them back out in the morning.
your dad is the soldier right? well brandon do me a favor and tell him i said thank you for his service and sacrafice and i hope you both get them younguns on a big tom good luck to you!
My Dad isn't the soldier, the kid that we were taking hunting has the Dad that just got back from deployment. He shot a jake this morning, which was his first turkey ever. What a great day!
