So I'm now officially shopping for a truck, and I'm curious to know what you guys have and what you honestly think of them. I'm most interested in 1/2 ton pickups, in the 2005-2008 range, low mileage, and that will likely have a sticker price of 17,000-20,000. Things I'd like to know about your truck: What make/model? What year? How many miles? Did you buy new/used? How many years/miles have you owned it? Any warranty claims? Any maintenance $$$ you have put into the truck? What exactly was it? Real world highway/city gas mileage? Thanks guys, I appreciate the feedback. As of right now, I'm really liking the Nissan Titan quite a bit. There is one 06' locally that has really low miles for a heck of a deal. I'm also liking the Silverado 1500's, and the F-150's. The only thing and I don't know if it's coincidence, is that a LOT of the guys locally with F-150's have had drivetrain problems with the front end. I'm curious to know what your experience is. Thanks in advance!!
Okay, I'll start. 2006 Ford F-150 extended cab, 6.5" bed, 4x4. 5.4L V8 I just turned over 49,000 miles on it. Purchased brand spanking new in September 2006 with 8 miles. To date, I have had no major issues with it. I've put in one warranty claim, and that was for the driver's side heater box not working so it never defrosted my driver's side window. The box arrived at the dealership last week, and will be going in this week. I'm past my factory warranty and onto my "extended warranty" so it will cost me a $100 deductible. I put new front brakes on at 46,000 miles right before our hunting trip, and put new tires on as well. I didn't necessary need new tires, but the stock ones that came with my truck sucked and I wanted them replaced before the season started anyways. I also had an air filter, fuel filter, trans service done and changed the transfer case and front/rear diff fluids. I should be good for another 50K now. :D Other than standard oil changes, air filters, and tire rotations I never did any other work to it. Gas mileage varies from 13-15 mpg around town depending on how I drive and the time of the year, and 15-17 mpg on the highway depending on the same factors. Considering my last truck only had a 4.6 in it and got worse mileage, I've been happy with it. Especially now that gas is back under $2/gallon! All in all, I've been extremely pleased with this truck. It's my 3rd Ford pickup I've owned and to be honest I've never had any major troubles with any of them. Except for blowing up the trans and rear end on my Lightning, but that was from beating the hell out of it and an excessive amount of wheel hop whilst doing burnouts on the backroads. :D
Awesome writeup Justin, that's exactly what I'm looking for. I also like the real world gas mileage example as well. I really like the Fords, I think they are a better looking truck than the Silverado's. My only concern is that I know several friends with 05-08 F-150's that have had front end drivetrain issues they had to get warrantied, some with well under 20k miles. That's my only concern. Anyone else?
What make/model? Ford F150 Lariat SuperCrew 4x4 What year? 2005 How many miles? 43,000 Did you buy new/used? New How many years/miles have you owned it? Since Aug 2005 Any warranty claims? None (one recall item, going in this week to do) Any maintenance $$$ you have put into the truck? What exactly was it? just some accessories (bed liner, soft tonneau, step bars, etc.) Real world highway/city gas mileage? Daily commute I average 15.5-16.5 mpg in the summer, once we get winter blend fuels I lose about 1-1.5 mpg Overall i'm really happy with the truck, it is comfortable to drive, quiet, roomy and well built... not overly powerful but has plenty for what I do and can tow anything I need... my wife took it to peoria to visit family a couple months back, she averaged 17.8mpg round trip on the highway, i'm leaving in two weeks headin to Alabama with the fam for christmas... I expect to average about 16.5-17mpg cuz of winter blend fuels... right now, if I were getting a new 09 I'd be getting a new Ram 1500 Crew Cab, seriously, take a look at 'em, imho, the 09 dodge with 390hp and the 5spd auto is the best drivetrain combo out there... I love my ford, its a great truck and I'll have it for another 3-5yrs, can't justify getting rid of it cuz it is so nice... with the F150, be sure to get the 3.73 gear option, best compromise between highway and towing gears... when the half ton diesels come out, i'll be back in the market though after a year or two of real world use to work out the bugs...
What make/model? Ford F150 FX4 SuperCab 4x4 What year? 2004 How many miles? 60,000 Did you buy new/used? New How many years/miles have you owned it? Since April 2004 Any warranty claims? Piece of door trim had to be replaced and Blew out the factory installed subwoofer. Any maintenance $$$ you have put into the truck? Recently had a rear axle seal go out while in Brown County. My neighbor is a Dodge mechanic and got the parts for both sides and a trans filter for 30 bucks and replaced for a couple of cases of beer. The dang tranny and rear end fluids cost 80 bucks. Replaced the tires at 50k and hit a duck at 65mph and had to replace the grill. Real world highway/city gas mileage? Daily commute I average 15.5mpg at my best estimate. I love this truck and have no regrets. It came with a decent 300 watt factory stereo to jam Ted Nugent songs on those chili hunting mornings. I also got a Leer Browning Edition cap that has a Gun Locker, clothing rack and top rack from Yakima. I have beat the hell out of this truck and only had the rear axle seal fail. My wife would love to get rid of it and have me get an SUV but screw her, I ain't putting dead deer in the back of an SUV and she already has an SUV and Summer Car. The interior of the truck is nice and the truck has a very solid feel. The thing drives nicer with 60k on it than my friends Range Rover with 40K. I intend to drive this thing until it dies or I die, which ever comes first. I would also watch out with Dodge Trucks, my neighboor said they are a pain in the arse to work on and things like the rear end and axles, rear brakes, etc take longer than most other domestic trucks to repair. My pops has a buddy with a Nissan Titan and loves it, my dear friend and town mayor also has a two wheel drive Titan and has had no complaints. Good luck and hope you find a great truck!
I don't know anyone that has bought an 09 yet, but my dad is planning on getting one sometime early this spring... he tells me that after the holidays are gone he's gonna be in the market... hopefully I'll get a chance to take it for a drive then and report back what i like/dislike about it...
Thanks guys, bought a truck last night and taking delivery tonight. I'll post a bit more when I pick her up.
Man... a lot of ford fans here. I'm more of a Chevy/Dodge fan myself. Once I graduate college I hope to get settled and get enough money to buy a new Dodge diesel. My dad actually just got rid of an older cummins diesel that had over 200k on it and it still ran and started great. Just had to keep it plugged in in the winter, which is normal for any diesel. The only downside is that diesel fuel is still kinda pricey.
Congrats on the new truck! I am hoping to get my truck in the spring! Hoping to get a Dodge Ram MegaCab.
I know you already bought a truck but I still want to post:d What make/model? Ford F-150, Reg Cab What year? 2007 How many miles? 38,000 Did you buy new/used? Bought new Jan. 1 2007 How many years/miles have you owned it? Almost 2 years Any warranty claims? The first week I had it the water temp gauge didn't work. I took it in and got it fixed. Haven't had a single issue since. Any maintenance $$$ you have put into the truck? What exactly was it? Nothing out of the ordinary. Oil change, Air filter, etc. Real world highway/city gas mileage? Highway 16-18, City 14-16
All these Fords... I will lamely post my truck. (which is too old to be of use to you.. but it deserves a pict or two.) When I was shopping for a new truck I was making the change from a '77 IH Scout Terra. My brother was a certified Ford Mechanic and told me not to buy the new Ford full size Pickups, 'specially the diesel. (this is back in 2000/2001) I drove and didn't like the dodge p/u. (which is saying a lot coming from a Scout owner) I drove the 1500 chebby and thought it was too soft. Then I saw this truck. A 2001 2500HD. It's been a great truck and I have throughly abused it. It's run traps, hauled several tons of rock, been locked in cruise control at 88 mph for hundreds of miles, hauled boats and done other 'trucky' things. It now has over 135K miles. I've replaced the starter. It takes two or three cranks to get it running (needs a tune up?), the ac/heater blower only works on speeds three and up, gas gauge doesn't work right.. and yet I still love it. I hate to have to look into buying another truck. Congrats on your new truck!
I know im to late but ill post just for kicks :d 1997 Chevy silverado with a 5.7 288,000 miles Got it when it had 163,000 on it. replaced head gasket, two water pumps, and all the usual small things. Gas mileage is around 15-17 mph best truck i have ever owned period. Its still going strong, like a rock
