But to answer the question, I killed my first mature buck while buck hunting a thick ridge leading to winter wheat.
I just got off the phone with Scott and he asked me to let you know that he'll update when he returns from the hospital with the new addition.
Here is the original story I wrote about the hunt a couple days after I got him. Edited some to correct some grammar etc... Well, the whole story starts Friday night. Friday evening around 6:00 I had a doe trot past my stand, right after she got past me I could hear a grunt and then another and another. A buck was grunting with every step while following her. He was just a little guy, they passed by about 30 yards out in some pretty thick underbrush. This stand is about 50 yards off some real thick bedding areas on an inside breakline. So I decided to go back to that lock on this morning and hope to catch some similar action. I didn't see anything until around a 8:15, a doe and a fawn worked past my stand. I was hoping for a repeat of the night before with a buck in tow, but no luck this time. Or, so I thought. My buck came in at 8:20 and milled around about 60 yards out feeding on acorns. He then started to work away from me out to about 80 yards now and held up there under an oak tree for a while. My heart sunk as he started off walking away from me again, but as soon as I started feeling bad for myself he looped around another oak and started heading back in my direction. He came all the way back to 21 yards of my stand offered a perfect broadside shot at 9:22AM and I released. It was a complete pass threw and the arrow stuck 5 inches in the ground. I then sat there collected my thoughts, then climbed down. I walked over to my arrow to check it then gathered up all my equipment and carried it all back to the truck. I then called my brother to help track and the long drag out. We waited an hour and a half to get on the trail. He only went about 60 yards. He was estimated at check in to be 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 years old. I am damn proud too, I set a goal to take a mature whitetail buck last year and although I didn't make it happen last year, I did succeed this year. This was my 8th hunt of the year, on the 13th day of the season. The buck in the truck on the left was my step dads he shot the day before, this photo was taken before we left for the butchers shop.
I remember when you posted that deer on HNI. It was the same year I killed my first mature buck. If I remember correctly you won the "moderator's cup" with that deer. Congrats on the new baby!
How time flies... It sure is cool to see how others have done over all the years :d I remember the deer you posted as well that year, a 5X4, darker toward the mains and manila toward the tine tips if I remember correctly. Actually, I thought we tied in mod cup voting? Again, thanks to all who have posted the congrats and kind words on my new son!
Maybe we did, that was 8 years ago! hehe I can't remember if it was the 5x4 or another deer. I was thinking it was a 8pt and I killed the 5x4 the following year... Now I have to consult my records.
I think you were wearing Mossy oak, and a beanie style hat. You and the deer were in a field with a treeline as a back drop?
I think it was this one: But I believe you are describing this one: I can't remember now which I killed first.
