My wife is big into having the kids eat healthy every single meal. That means we are all eating veggies alnd fruits nearly every lunch and dinner. Well sometimes mom is....well mom is gone and the party begins! So for all the dads out there, what is your best "dad" dinner when mom is gone. Tonight I am cooking my three kids homemade pizza, watermelon sticks, Veggie crackers, and chocolate cake! My wife would slap my face if she only knew...hahahaha!

On "dads dinner" night I am also famous for making Steak Ums with barbecue sauce, macaroni and cheese, and finished off with some sort of fruit that probably has no nutritional value. What about you guys? What do you make on dads dinner night? Or for those of you who are not fathers yet, what did your dad make you in pinch that you just loved?

Good question since my wife and two teenagers have been out of town since Tuesday..leaving me with the 2 y/o for a week.

Tonight I went to Brookshires and bought a Marie Callendars lasagna and some breadsticks...yummy.
Last night we went and got a bucket of chicken and the sides.
Wed I smoked a pork tenderloin with apple wood, mac n cheese, fried okra, sliced tomatos
Tues night we ordered a pizza.

Eating bad is the only benefit of the wife being away

I have nothing to add to this as I am not a dad... and I have no kids (unless you count a dog and chickens)

What the heck is a high taste cracker?

Mr4pt, your Wed night dinner sounds pretty healthy to me (minus the mac n cheese).

I'm thinking about fixin' myself some sliced zucchini fried in lard. That's healthy, because it's zucchini! Pizza sounds good too. I wish I lived in a place where delivery is available. I'm not real motivated to cook when it's 93 degrees in the house. ;)

I remember my dad and I used to fish our tails off several times a week each spring and summer. We would get so hungry that we would stop by KFC and get like 40 honey BBQ wings and a coke on the way home. We would be in heaven with stinky ripped up bass fingers and honey bbq sauce.

Pizza, KFC, steak. Not too many veggies while mom is gone! Gotta take advantage of it you know! Now that I am married I do miss moms cooking though. At least I go over every Sunday and eat good!

Last night Mom was at her monthly card game with some friends...

I spread some white corn chips (the restaurant style) on three plates, browned some venison burger meat, drained it and spread it all over the chips and covered it all thickly with a pile of shredded cheddar cheese and finished it off in the microwave to make sure the cheese was all melted real good.

One of my favorite "Dad" meals... quick and easy but makes it look like I sorta know what I'm doing. :)

The wife usually makes more then we can eat at a meal so if I have to deal with the kids... it is left over night or fend for yourself. Thank God the wife is almost always at home so it usually isn't a probelm.

I'm lucky that growing up my Dad was honestly the better cook. My mom made most of the meals during the week and it was always the same kind of basic things. Some kind of meat, some kind of vegetable and some kind of carbohydrate. Occasionally, there'd be some spaghetti thrown in there. They were never fancy, but they were always solid.

My Dad on the other hand, would cook most weekends. We'd wake up to steak and eggs, biscuits and gravy, pancakes and occasionally orange julius. One morning, we even woke up to him making eclairs from scratch. For lunches and dinners we'd have everything from homemade stews and soups, ribs, steaks, chops, stuffed chicken breasts and stir fries to fettucine alfredo, lasagna and more.

We didn't eat out a lot in my house, but when we did, it was because we had been up and working outside all day. In those cases, we'd either get to order pizza or italian beef sandwiches. And anyone who has ever lived around Chicago knows how good those are.

Now that I'm with the fiance, she tends to cook more of the weekly solid meals. She's a lot more adventurous with her cooking then my Mom was, but it's still pretty normal stuff on a daily basis. I try to keep the tradition alive by cooking more elaborate things on occasion, but I also get to try a lot of different kinds of food during lunch since I work in the Twin Cities. Just last week, I went to a restaurant called Bullfrog that served Louisiana cuisine. I had a crawdad po'boy, fried okra and the guys I was with shared a basket of fried gator, fried pickles and frog legs.

Being in the city again has given me opportunities to eat some of the foods I loved in Chicago but had a hard time finding in other places. There are several places where the pad thai is unbelievably good, there's two sushi places about 10 blocks from my office that are amazing and occasionally I get to head over to the Greek restaurant a few blocks away that serves gyros with big, thick slices of lamb and general helpings of tzatziki sauce.

I still want to know what a high taste cracker is... :(

My real father cooked really old fashioned stuff. Fried squirrels with gravy. Roast raccoon. Clams from the river (bleagh!!). Oatmeal for breakfast.

My 1st step-father got take out or made really good 'splurge' food. Steaks, king crab legs..

My 2nd step-father didn't feed us, he got drunk and passed out.

Both my mom and dad are very good cooks. Mom's day off from cooking was Sunday. After church dad would take us out for Breakfest. Dad would cook a big meal for dinner and usually grill for supper. Winters it would be another fairly big meal for supper. Holiday meals were a joint affair between the two.

I never had the urge to cook when I was young to this day. I was out doing chores, yard work, haying, hunting/trapping or working for someone. Nothing has changed to the present. Farming takes a lot of my time. If you want me to cook supper be prepared to be eating anywheres from 11 PM to 5 AM depending on what we are doing. I eat out of a lunch box 5 - 7 days a week. The last thing I want to do when I come home is eat a crappy meal I threw together. The wife is just too darn fine of a cook to be wasting her talents. Never had the time to learn the skill of good cooking nor the desire. It would have kept me from being outside. I can cook good enough to survive but why make the children suffer?? :p

When we do have kids, it will more than like be the opposite in my house. When I go out of town, my wife always orders herself pizza or gets fried chicken because she knows I rarely will want to get fatty, greasy foods at night, which she loves.

When I was younger, Dad's meal was liver and onions. No sides. Or gumbo.
