So i am no located in Bradford, PA... for college, and being from new Hampshire i am love the outdoors so i decided to come to this school because its right next to the Allegheny state forest.

Long story short there is nothing really to do around here, but i watch the outdoors tv channel religiously and i want to start bow hunting!

So my question is what would you suggest for a first bow (i know i want a compound)?
    -Pounds?
-Brand(PSE caught my eye, Mathews also a challange bow or something made by mathews??)

Also, i notice the bows can be pretty pricey! i plan selling my motorcycle in the spring so i will have around 3,000 dollars, but want to get a bow that will last a while!

I want a bow that can easily take down a deer but i can still turkey hunt with it if i wanted to, i am orignally from NH so i will hunt both states.

congrats on college and to give you my opinion here it is

i shot a pse when i was 12 then hoyt at 15 then mathews at 18 had 4 different mathews bows loved them then bought a bowtech allegiance at 26 then a gaurdian at 28 then a 101st airborne at 29 i am 30 now and shoot a bowtech captain nicely equiped your looking at 1600.00 with arrows now i tell you technology changes every year so wait till later after all the new models come out then go in to the bow shop and shoot all sorts of them and buy the one that feels the best to you some vibrate some pull harder than others and some are just plain smooth (if i had to tell you which one to buy it would be the bowtech captain hands down, but that is all personal preference) hope it helps and good luck with your decision. let me know

Welcome to the site first of all. You're going to find a lot knowledgeable guys on here that know their stuff about hunting, tuning bows, anything and everything.

As far as poundage- a 40 lb. draw can kill a deer and some bows max out at 70 pounds. My advice start slow and work your way up to a poundage you can easily draw smoothly quiety and without making more movement than necessary.

All of today's bows are capable of killing a deer, some are better than others of course. Find and shoot as many bows as you can and find the one that "just feels right"

Thanks for the quick replies! trying to find a bow on ebay maybe some one selling last years model or hope to strike a good deal on a PSE or Mathews bow. Either way i think you guys are right i need to go to the store and try some out. Then again i have never shot a bow and before i even start hunting i am going to practice for a while! So i am gunna be a little shy and embarrassed walking into a bow store and asking to shoot 800$ bows when i never shot a bow! lol.

Biggest thing is before you go buying a bow online you need to know your draw length!!! You can get that measured at a proshop.

I wouldn't go over a 60lb bow nowdays because there is absolutely no need to whatsoever!

Almost every company makes a good bow...but I know Darton has had some problems with limbs cracking, so personally I'd stay away from them!

I shoot an 2005 Bowtech Allegiance and love it, but wouldnt mind upgrading next year to something a touch newer:)

Bowtech makes some really sweet bows, but so do others....as a matter of fact my buddy has a Ross ( who is now owned by Bowech) and I shot it the other day and I was like damn is that thing smooth!!!

The biggest thing is to go out and shoot some different ones and see what you like personally.....every bow might be different for you, so I wouldnt buy one online till you check some out firsthand, and to tell you the truth mine came from ebay, but I knew what I wanted and my draw and other important things when I bought it tho:)

Good Luck and Welcome and all I can tell you is practice..practice ..practice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Unless of course you have a shop you want to be loyal to.

But check out their packages and website.

Well i was in the same situation as you but i went traditional and i love it i went with only 45 pound recurve and trust me i was glad its harder than it looks. I have a blast shooting it so don't completely forget about traditional shooting.
