Assuming the are both lethal shots and deer is 100% dead for sanity purposes. I'll take the blood trail so I can continue to teach my son how to track a deer. He's usually in the woods with me and I'll have him come over and follow it with me.
I hunt where it's not really open enough to watch 'em drop. Consequently I've always had to follow a blood trail.
Dead in sight. If I don't see them go down a little doubt always starts creeping into my mind and I hate it.
Besides all the scouting and preseason prep taking up a good blood trail is much of the fun of the hunt. Don't get me wrong, I love to know I made a good shot. I also love the challenge of finding that next spot of blood, then the next one ten yards further, then another. Then you lose the trail only to find it by circling around and finding a drop the size of a pin head on the trail you thought the deer chose to run. It's like solving a problem. It's rewarding finally spotting the trophy after you've tested and proven your skills. There's nothing better than the successful end of a tough blood trail. If I only wanted to see them drop I'd use my 270. Nothing wrong with seeing them drop but I just feel like I miss out on some of the hunt if I do.
I shot one today and it fell dead in it's tracks. I was kind of disappointed to not get to blood trail. It took some of the excitement out for me. Still pumped I got one the second day out.
Exactly this. Think I read the question wrong. I'll track them a mile, but the shorter the drag the better lol
Well said^^. Following a blood trail is a reminder that nothing in life is certain... never take it for granted. Notice my signature block... no guts... no story! That's because "You ain't smoked nothing "Dude", til the deer's in the truck."
I had to blood trail today, and it was enjoyable. I enjoyed the suspense of finding that next spot of blood. With that said, I still like to see them go down.
since I mostly hunt public land, I have to say dead w/in sight (although never been so lucky.) Way too many variables to let me feel comfortable until I am standing over them shucking my knife out. I love to track deer though...but it's much less stressful when it's someone else's deer.
