Almost the same exact thing happened today as the other day with this buck. I posted a thread about getting down from my stand and walking out when I saw a big buck bed down 30 yards from me. Long story short it was 9:00am and I sat there until 4:30pm waiting for him to move. He did, but didn't work out for me. Anyway.... I'm in my stand this morning on the other side of the bedding area same general area and I see him cruising. He crosses the same creek comes to about 60 yards and plops down!!!!!!!!!!! This really can't be happening again. This time I'm stuck in a tree. After an hour or so of pleading for him to get up and head my way I decide to talk to him. I grunt and grunt and grunt and bleat and bleat and bleat and rattle and rattle and rattle. This dude could care less about my orchestra of calls lol. So I'm stuck again. 4 more days of bow season for me and I really don't want to get down and spook this dude. So there I am planning on getting out at 9:30-10:00 and stuck AGAIN on the same buck that did the same thing to me a few days ago! He's a big 9 (thought he was a 10 originally but got a better look today)with good mass that I would definitely want to shoot in the worst way. So I freaking decide to stick it out and wait again. I'm in absolute agony watching this thing all day. He actually got up and moved toward me to 43 yards and plopped back down. About 4:30pm 2 does come from behind me and 50 yards or so from him. He lifted his head and checked them out for awhile. Then he gets up and makes his way towards them slipping away from me! Another 7 hours sitting there that I didn't intend to be there. That guy has me stuck in my stand 14 hours more than I wanted to be there for now without getting a shot at him. I almost said screw it about 100 times and almost started climbing down knowing he was going to bolt, but couldn't bring myself to do it. I can't believe that happened again. This guy is driving me nuts. Dont' know how else to set up on him, but I'm hanging around that area if I get stuck again or not. Packing a lunch from now on though.
Can you relocate your stand? He did the same thing, should give you a clue where to relocate it? If not, did you try a snort wheez, in your orchestra of calls?
I agree, try and relocate. You set the stand, and obviously didn't spook him. Go out one afternoon and move it closer to where he's bedding. If you fear him not coming back if you jump him, give up a morning hunt and move it before he comes in and then hunt it or leave and hunt it another day.
Dude, you had me crackin up all day with your updates! :D ........... I told you to go NINJA on his butt.....
Another vote for the long pin! I actually had a doe bed down about 12 yards from me on Saturday morning and she didn't care about my bleat, grunt, snort wheeze or growl!! Then I actually used my voice and she stood up and slowly walked by my stand... If only there was a buck in tow. Good luck man
Through text messages??? Wasn't it NY that frowned upon that? LOL. Anyway good luck there Ken, you deserve at least a shot at him.
I was doing some calculating in my dreams. In two days I've actually been looking at this deer for 16 hours. 7 hours the first day when I walked up on him and we had an all day standoff and 9 hours on stand yesterday with him there the whole time. Mr. sleepy is going to get it. yeah yeah yeah I take it back. I confess I adopted the art of texting. It does pass the time sitting sunup to sundown:p
I was actually planning an "almost all dayer" Was going to stay late for the morning and back in early afternoon. So I decided just to stay. No biggie.... until he got up and walked the other way!
Wow! Pretty cool encounter even though it does qualify you for the "Iron Butt" award... 43 yards? He better hopes he doesn't bed down broadside or quartering away to me...
if that buck is doing anything consistantly, capitolize on his habits. if he's coming in on the same trail, figure out how to set up on it. if he's leaving on the same trail, set up on it. keep the wind in mind. look to the detailed weather, hour to hour to take note of any predicted wind change,(direction). you know more about this buck than you realize. figure it out and whack him!
