I have exactly 7 days of hunting left. I was hunting NEAR my go to stand that I've seen most of my bucks from this season, and the one that I shot my buck out of. I was SW of that stand tonight since the wind was from the NW. Long story short, a nice buck entered the field chasing doe where they usually enter (SE corner). From my spot, I could only watch, but tomorrow they're calling for a light ENE wind. That's an IFFY wind for this stand, but not terrible. I've seen a TON of activity in the area including 7 of the 8 bucks I've seen this season from this very stand. Given the amount of time, and the lack of potential SW winds in the forecast, would you go for it?
Matt, as I have mentioned in another thread similar to this, you have to "strike when the iron is hot" There are only seven days left, the rut is in full swing and you're seeing a lot of bucks in the area. You better believe if it were me, I'd be sleeping in that stand, regardless of wind. I used to make that mistake of "tippy toeing" around a particular area for fear of spooking or bumping deer. Meanwhile, I would watch bucks from a distance walk back and forth because the wind "wasn't right". I didn't fill many tags that way. Go get your buck dude!
There's no guarantees with hunting, it's just that this spot has proven itself to to me enough times the past two seasons that I know it CAN be good, and it has been. No saying that the chasing will continue this evening there, but at least it's a spot I know the deer ARE. I guess I'm hitting it hard these final days.
Well, sure enough, there was chasing again tonight. Just down where I was last night and not where I was tonight. They're playing cat and mouse with me. Persistence pays off, right? Back at again tomorrow. Anyone here ever chase the chasing? I think I'm going to go back to the stand I was in tonight rather than chasing them around.
MGH, all you can do is put together your best plan and let it rip each day. That is what I try to do each and every hunt. I gameplan based on a variety of factors and just set up. Many times I just take a map and walk in blind because things change so quickly where I hunt. I know I put in my best effort each hunt and that makes me sleep well at night. I KNOW you are gonna make it happy man. Best of luck to you.
Best of luck, like many have said if the deer are in the area and are rutting your persistance will have to pay off.
Ha, I've done the chase the chasing thing, actually just last season I did this and lost that game. If an area is hot its hot. Like said, sit a stand long enough and it will pay off.
Yeah, not sure I really want to chase. The stand I was in last night is probably my best bet overall (I THINK).
