For a long time I've thought about, "Chasing the Rut", or hunting in different parts of the country as the whitetail rut ebbs and flows. For example, hunt my home state of Virginia during the traditional rut times, then move on to states like Texas, Louisiana, and Alabama which have parts that have the rut peaking at a much later date. I'd really like to hunt for a few days or a week in each place. Camp out or sleep in the back of my truck. Just something I have thought about a long time and really hope I am able to do one day....

What about you guys, any of you ever want to chase the rut?

Yep, that's what all the TV hunting celebs do, but they are being sponsored. I'd LOVE to be able to chase the rut, but there would be serious time and money issues for me personally. Great thought though Brett. :tu:

I've certainly thought about it but time would be the issue for me. I'm thinking of retiring in a few years so maybe that should be one of my goals. It would definitely be an adventure though. And it would definitely take alot of careful planning. I hope you get to do it someday.

    Blessings..........Pastorjim

I don't get to hunt enough to fill all my tags in one state as it is, lol.

I think I could swing it if I slept in a camper or maybe in the bed of my truck. Lol. Or maybe I'll actually have some money in about a decade as my kids start getting out of college.

Staying with that train of thought, it would be nice to have a trail across the country of a group of hunters , that could start east and work their way west, Virginia, is a great place having lived in Roanoke. For a few years, it looks like we now have Virginia, to Kentucky, covered, each host would arrange, the hunt in home state., feel free to add on.. I have property in Ky, camping required at this point.

That was the plan for Justin and I this year between IL and KS. It seems most of KS gets really good about Thanksgiving time where IL it’s first half of November. Unfortunately we just didn’t see what we were looking for in KS so we pulled the plug on the idea.

That would really be something if you went from Kentucky to North Dakota, then Iowa, then Illinois, Kansas, and then Missouri on public ground! I think your stars would need to align and you’d need a lot of money and time to pull it off!

The peak of the rut is like November 10-15th here in southern Ohio. Key word peak. It never ends through the entire hunting season. I just took a nice buck on Jan 16th and he was on a doe wearing her down. If it wasn't for her? I'd still be in the stand.. ;)

Here is a video of the same buck I shot.. on a doe Dec 25th

That would be cool. West KY. Seek/chase starts around 10-25, then reaches it's peek around 11-8, then full blown rut till 11-18, then another hardcore frenzy of seeking from 11-18 to 11-30.

I personally hate the rut with a passion locally...all the buck's I'm keeping tabs on become sporadic, unpredictable and even disappear for week's at a time :(

I hear you Josh. I wish I had more time to hunt in October and December. I just can't find much time to hunt the afternoons because of family. Hunting in the morning for pressured and panicky bucks is darn hard around here. So I throw most all my chips into the rut.

I love the proposed idea (and kind of get to do so already) but it would be a few years before that truck camper pays for itself- can get a hotel room for less than $100/night. A truck camper that nice will probably run you over $5000.

Not saying it wouldn't be worth it for the flexibility and fun; but as far as being cost efficient it'll be awhile....and a hotel room w/ unlimited hot showers and a big bed is not to be ignored when chasing the rut. I spend about 30-40 days in a camper every year chasing deer and it can be a grind.
