What is your plan? 1.)If you can not walk? 2.)If you can not talk? 3.)Is someone aware of exactly where you are? 4.)Are you prepared? This is something we need to take to heart guys/gals. Bobby
It happens each year, doens't it. We all hear the stories, and some of us know someone who has fallen. I've come very close, once. Precautions need to be made, no doubt. There just always seems like there is that ONE scenario you never think about, or can't plan for. That's the one that'll get ya...
Usually my brother knows my where abouts when I'm out hunting. I'll usually text him and let him know where I'll be In case he decides to hunt the same woods and also just so he knows where I'm at If I have trouble. My cell Is usually always with me for reasons such as this and my work.
My brother always knows where im hunting, if i fall and im conscious, i call 911 then my captain on the fire department, so he can find me easier. Wilderness rescue is not easy especially in dark or unknown territory and if the victim is out then its even more work.
I make it a point to tell my wife or son where ill be hunting at just in case. cell phone signal is useless where i hunt so i have to have somewhat of a plan,,part of it is my safety harness
There is always someone who knows where I am. Ive always got my cell phone on me too. And if im bad enough that I cant talk or walk, might as well leave me for the yote's...
1. I suppose crawl. 2. There won't be anyone to hear me anyway. 3. No. people know the areas I usually hunt. I check in daily. 4. Depending on the injury. I can make a fire and wait for someone to find me. I don't worry about it. I gotta go sometime and what better place?
This year I will likely leave a gps unit at home with my location in it. I used to leave a map with my location marked. I amy do that too.
No one would find me in some of the spots I hunt... There is a sign posted at a public hunting marsh in Southern Wisconsin that is a memorial to a guy who was an avid hunter and went back there hunting one evening and was never seen again. Nobody ever found him. I think its around Horicon marsh somewhere... I often don't know where I will hunt when I go out... It depends on deer sign, wind, and a host of other variables. Sometimes I even travel to other states without telling my family, I know that sounds bad, but thats the way it is during hunting season. In my opinion, if your hurt so bad you can't get yourself out of the woods, help likely will not get there in time, and I would rather a stranger find me than a family member... Its likely going to be body recovery if I can't make it out of the woods. I once stepped in a beaver hole and twisted my ankle pretty severe 1 1/2 miles out in a nasty marsh and had to crawl and hop thru muck and briars, but I made it out... As far as lying out there with a broken back? I wear a harness and am as careful as possible. Cell phones are a good idea, but I don't have one and would likely ruin it in the swamps... I go thru two or three video cameras a year.
I guess I may never be that hardcore Dan. I always leave a map marked with what stand I will be in, and never vary from that more than 25 or 50 yds. I always wear a safety harness going up and coming down. I try to be as careful as possible as well. I carry a cell phone, but sometimes I may not have the best service. Some things can be prevented though, and some precautions can be taken. We will never have it all covered, but a reminder is always good to stay as safe as possible. Bobby
I only hunt one place and if I don't call my wife or arrive home shortly after dark she would call the calvary to find me.
I just made up 3 new safety lines with Prussic knots over the weekend. I won't be in a tree without a harness. If I fall I'll climb back into my stand, regroup, thank God, climb down go to camp and change my drawers.
Typically a friend knows where I'm hunting and how long I will be out there. I also have my cell phone in my pocket as well
