It's 80 degress out and you don't go hunting. I did not hunt at all this weekend, to damn hot 15 years ago I would have not missed a day, so instead I winterize my trailer and mowed the grass. When you get older and have family I have learned to pick my battles. My wife thinks I am a saint because I stayed home and did her list. I know the odds were not in my favor for this weekend. What was the movement like this weekend in the Midwest?
I've got a small property I used to do alot of squirrel hunting on. Deer aren't moving much around here so I think me and dad are gonna go out this evening with the .22's and pop some squirrels rather than deer hunt.
I hunted friday and sat. afternoon, just for last couple hours, still seen deer but no shooters; felt good just to get out. I won't be getting out again till 22nd, due to work. By then temps should be falling and rest of crops should be hopefully out.
I agree and I dont know because I was watching soccer all weekend and enjoyed the nice weather. Now if you ask me in 2 weeks and its this hot I may curse a lot.
I just came in from mowing the lawn... When my youngest gets up from his nap, I'm taking both the boys fishing later this evening.
Seriously... it's just no fun anymore when it's this freakin' hot around here... It's 89 degrees right now. I'm getting where I HATE hunting in those conditions... especially when I can remember it being in the 60's at least for this time of year when I was growin up.
I sat 2 sits. ;-) I remember a couple seasons ago, opening week was 90 deg... I went once, sweated and fought mosquitoes.... not fun.
After 20 some years of archery hunting i still go when its hot. Guess i havent killed enough yet.............
Funny, but I first started hunting in South Texas where it's ALWAYS hot... but the last few years I've gotten used to the cold weather hunting and done most of it in the mountains of wild and wonderful West Virginia. Now, I find it tougher to enjoy the day if it's 70+ and I sweat on the hike in. I like a little crispness in the air. Also a lot to be said for a couple of days of freezing nights to clear out the mosquitoes and flies.
"My wife thinks I am a saint because I stayed home and did her list. I know the odds were not in my favor for this weekend." That is one of the tips I always speak about...pick a day like a Saturday to not hunt when the weather just stinks to hunt. THAT will earn you weeks of freedom in the woods. What a SAGE move Germ!
I dunno about killing plenty of deer but the heat should have most people out of the woods unless they have a good one coming in or they're doe hunting. Most trophy hunters have come to realize its not always the amount of time you spend in the woods, but more the correct days to be out there. Heat and bad moon = no shooters til late. Ive stayed out of the woods and got all my honey do's done and glass in the evenings. Nothing but does and 1.5 bucks out before dark, most of my 3.5 yr old and older bucks are not moving until midnight or later. I think ive learned more this year with the heat that its better to not stink an area up just because i want to be out there bc on my sits for good days im seeing great movement due to lack of pressure. Just my 2 cents
A successful evening in the heat... as an aside... I absolutely forgot how much of a joy it is to have a nice electric filet knife. I'd told the rugrats that we weren't keeping anything before we got there, but... well, crap. What's a dad to do? It WAS his biggest bass to date so far... :D
Agree...took my boys for about a 50 minute sit yesterday morning (basically to watch the sun rise) and saw 3 does...then we hit the lake for some bass fishing. Yard work and enjoying the family time as well rest of weekend...I used to cuss this weather b/c it was ruining my hunting season - now I like it so I don't even care to hunt - save those days for when it matters in Nov and I can hit it harder then.
