Good luck! I hope your day is productive, even if you don't find a shed. You have been waiting a while to get out....enjoy it!
Yep, that's the depressing part. He was pretty gray in the nose/face, had a nice Roman look to him. Body was big. Just screamed big deer. I just hope he shed on property I can shed hunt.
March 14th, 2009: It worked out nice, my in-laws kept my two little ones last night and into today. I told the wife I was heading to bed early last night so I could get up and shed hunt. I focused early on hitting the cornfields that were impassable last week. The cold temps last night really firmed things up so I took advantage of the weather since I knew it was going to warm up later on today. Grew tired of walking the stalks so I switched it up and started hitting travel corridors between bedding and food source. It was a pretty slow, uneventful day. Found a decent spot to set up a ground blind with lots of natural cover for a solid backdrop. It would place me on the edge of a cornfield, just inside a grassy pasture on a pretty solid trail. I also found a pretty good looking tree suitable for a climber. :D Just before 1 pm, as I was running out of time to hunt, I bumped about 25 deer from their afternoon beds. Note to self, check that spot again for sheds. On my way out of the woods, I recalled how often I come up empty handed until the walk back to my truck. It really is a phenomenon with me and shedding. I don't know what it is, but when I make up my mind to head back to the truck, I find sheds. I'm not complaining, but today proved to be no different. I was following a fence row looking for sheds that may have rustled lose from a buck jumping the fence and sure enough, I found the first shed of the day. A dinker, but dinkers grow if you let them. :D It was fresh enough hair was still stuck to the base. I continue to walk back to my truck with a little more spring in my step. Just as I was contend with today's outing, I just so happen to find yet another shed. A year old dinker. I probably walked past this guy a few times. The squirrels had gotten a hold of it. Sure enough, my theory had come true yet again. On my way out, I did some more thinking. Here is what I came up with. My sheddin' adventures are more like Hollywood Action Thrillers than just a simple stroll through the woods. You gotta build the plot through storytelling. A few false alarms, some hardbreak when a spot doesn't pan out. Then, of course, the plot thickens. You find a spot that looks sheddy. Slowly, you are becoming engrossed in the story. The "sheddy" spot doesn't work out and of course, they throw you another curveball, kinda like bumping 25 deer which only thickens the plot some more. Just as you are thinking the movie is gonna end, BAM, a flurry of intense action and one heck of an ending. Roll credits. Thunderous applause. Sure it would be nice to say I found a set of bomber sheds in the cornfield right off the bat. But what fun would that be. Since that wasn't the case, I'll settle for the dinkers and a cool theory about my shed hunting experiences.
Thanks guys. I have some more places pinpointed to search yet and I have one big set and another antler to complete a set on my hitlist before green-up. :D Needless to say, I will be pretty pumped if I find either this spring! I can't believe how well I have done this year. With the limited hours, I am happy with finding 7 sheds so far!
Dave...you're kicking butt man. I don't even want to disclose the amount of time I've put in so far.....AND for what???? Nothing!
Consider this peer pressure to get your butt out there Balls... Empty_stand my ass.... Try empty_shed'n_grounds :d
Ohhh no, there are plenty better shedders than me. I just have enjoyed this year.... I gotta get out a few more times.
