So I spoke with Easton and this is what they are telling me. I am borderline 400 but could go 340. I have been shooting both and the 400 gives me good speed end penetration as does the 340. Shooting the Beman ICS hunter 400 and Easton FMJ 340. Now they said I can step it up to a 125g BH from the 100g. I have read a lot of you guys are using a fixed blade on Elk and that is what I will be hunting. I was wondering if this is good advice. I know you should keep the BH as close the field point weight as much as possible. I also know that a lot of deer/elk have been taken with 100g. Just wanted to get some feedback from all of you, and yes i did a search on here and did not find the answer I was looking for. So any and all input it good. I am pulling 65lbs 26" draw and have arrows set at 26.5 and 27 with the G5 Montec. Thanks
Hi "P" Personally I think Easton gave you outstanding advice. 125gr heads will give you a greater FOC % - enhancing the arrow's penetration capability. As for your field tips... just switch out the 100's you currently have for 125gr and practice, practice, practice. Best of luck to you on your elk excursion!
If you're borderline, go with the stiffer spine. Everything I checked said I was borderline with my last bow. I shot pretty good, but not as consistent as I'd like. I switched to Beman .340s and it made all the difference in the world. Go for it! I don't think you'll be disappointed at all If you're thinking of switching to 125 gr heads, definitely drop to the 340s. If you're borderline now, adding more weight up front will put you under spined by a lot
Definitely go with the stiffer spine if you are border line. Adding a heavier broadhead does a few things, including increasing your FOC for better flight and better penetration. Also if you add a 125gr head it will relax your spine just a little. So if the 340's are on the stiff side, then a 125 should bring that spine back to almost perfect for you.
I shoot 100 gr BH's on 400 FMJ's, and 125's on 340 Beeman's. I did this to keep arrow weight the same and they both fly very good. Penetration is equal as it is the total mass doing the work, FOC is within range on both. Complete pass through last fall on a bull at 43 yds with the FMJ's. Bow was set at 70 lb draw with a 29" draw length.
