I am going to mow clover one last time in a day or two and I have a couple more winter plots to get put in asap. Our opener is Oct. 1st as always. I have not hunted the opener for at least 40 years. But, this year will find me in a stand or blind. I finally hit a stage of life that will allow me to be flexible enough with my schedule to get out and enjoy what I have worked so hard to have. Maybe I can get some points put up very early for me. I am spending this week at the lake place and shooting my bow and getting all my gear squared away for the season and finishing up plots.
Well sh!t. I just went out to freshen up my Buckstik and Buckrope (not a plug) after this rain and my shooter was bedded at my blind. Like, literally using the blind as his back cover. This is the urban spot, so hopefully he isn't too bothered by a human at 12 yards.
I haven’t had any luck using a Buckstik for the last year what’s the trick? Sent from my iPhone using ]][emoji[emoji6]]]Bowhunting.com Forums
I mostly use them on trails to get bucks to stop in front of me. I have one in a plot, but it doesn't get as much action. I have good luck using their gland scents on natural scrapes too.
In my little corner of the world we have lots of cattle producers. The deer are used to ATV's and pickups driving around in random pastures and fields. I try to do everything I can from a pickup or my tractor. This week I had a raccoon knock a camera down at the edge of a clover field so I drove my pickup right to the camera at noon and put it back up. A few hours later I had pictures of mature bucks that I know had to watch me drive through there. I think they will put up with pressure pretty well as long as it is not someone "sneaking" around shooting at them. lol
I would also agree that they are pretty used to things that happen often. Our main trail system gets used pretty heavy for family driving through the woods on wheelers and trucks. I had a pretty good encounter with a nice buck a few years back while some of my family were sighting in rifles and some others were driving around the main trails in vehicles. Didn't seem to bother the deer I was watching 50 yards away from me. I listened to a podcast a while back where a guy was hunting in the dakotas and he asked the property owner to continue doing his chores while was hunting to keep the consistency of disruption that happens daily.
I have the best luck with hanging a 3 foot piece of thumb thick grape vine with paracord to create a mock scrape. I haven't tried the buckstik, looks interesting and your deer are for sure hitting it!
Hello team. I've been a bit busy lately but I snagged a new piece of property locally. 5 minutes away with good potential. I put out a cam yesterday despite getting loaded with crap load of little burrs. The woods and swamp are behind 4-5 local businesses. The bar owner who owns the woods has been seeing does behind the bar. I figure this piece will be good once the bucks start cruising. My two other private pieces have a lot of movement at night right now. I have a few hemp ropes out with buck butter and they sure love hitting them. I won't be able to get out until next weekend. I'm taking a buddy who is 76 up to the Northwoods to meet another buddy at a cabin for some fishing. My buddy found out his BF died yesterday so he is like F it let's go. He gets around so so and thought earlier this year was his last time going up. So I'm going with to help drive up. Good luck and please be safe out there!
