Depends on the state I guess. In WI, the shooter, be it the farmer himself, his family or anyone else he gives his crop damage permits to, must make every effort to recover the animal-just like a regular hunter. It's a hot topic around here too because the state also pays the farmer for wildlife crop damage as well as giving out permits.
