I was looking at the column and noticed your add. I have a 9 year old grandson who hunts with me. I bought a 300.00 Browning for him only to find out he can't pull 30 lb yet! OOPS!!!!!! If you haven't had him checked for poundage, you should do that! Just a heads up so you don't make the same mistake! Enjoy hunting with him, he will be your best friend!!!!!

    BBD,
If I were you, I'd do what I've done. Pick up a crossbow, let him use that until he can draw 45# or so, and then convert him over. If you're already shooting a bow, he's gonna want to shoot one. But you don't want to put him in a position w/ a LOW POUNDAGE set-up where he wounds and loses one and breaks his heart. I set my nephew up this past season w/ a Hoyt Ultratec once he got to where he could pull about 48#, he's now shooting it at about 53# and loving it, but he enjoyed being out there w/ the crossbow as well. No shame in using a weapon to get a kid addicted to it, then helping him love "real" archery as well once he's ready. FWIW, check AT.com classifieds, there are a TON of lower poundage set--ups you can find over there, but I think you want to make sure if he's gonna hunt you have enough energy behind his arrow that it doesn't turn into a heartbreak as well, I know I did. I found a Browning Micro-Eclipse for $80 delivered from a guy who was closing out a shop a couple years ago, and was able to get my wife to enjoy shooting a little w/ a 40# bow that had originally been $370, for a REAL BARGAIN!!! Good Luck either way.

For the money and something that would GROW with him, this is an AWESOME DEAL..... http://www.archerytalk.com/vb/showthread.php?t=1174512

    BBD,
take a serious look at Bowtech's diamond line. they have bows that are adjustable in both poundage & DL. I just bought my kid (14) one last yr, a Razor Edge. It's adjustable from 30-60#, 19-29" DL. It comes with everything but arrows. It came with a rest, sight, quiver, wrist strap. price $329. He'll have it till he's an adult and can buy his own. They do make a smaller one called Nuclear Ice. 10-29# dw, & 14-24" DL.
Get your son to a shop, so you can see what he can pull for weight and what his DL is, then you can go from there. Check around some sites, you might be able to find one used. Good luck to you.

First of all dont let him shoot a crossbow he will thank you down the line for letting him do it the harder way with a compound...... when i shot my first deer it was with a 50 lbs diamond justice and i thanked my father for pushing me into the challenge of taking a deer with a compound bow. Ever since i have only hunted with a bow and never intend to change to a gun or a crossbow. Anyway i would look at the diamond edge its very versitial and made by bowtech so you know your getting a reliable product.
