I have been talking to my Father-in-Law (who has MUCH more bowhunting/archery experience than I do) about my stance, form, set-up, etc. He says I NEED a wrist sling.

I use a low wrist open handed grip, and according to him, my bow should jump out of my hand after my shot. I do my best to not move until I hear my arrow make contact with my target, I don't look around my bow to watch the shot, drop my forward hand, etc. and have not had the problem of a jumping bow. I'm using a very light 2012 Alpine React which is a complete feather compared to his older Matthews.

Just wondering what your opinions are on them. I have no problems trying nearly anything once.

Also, if anyone has plans for making one, I would prefer that to buying one. I have plenty of 550 cord lying around I can use for a braided one, and I am a leatherworker, so I have all the supplies needed to tool one from scratch out of 8-10 oz veg tanned cowhide.

If you want to make your own, look up bowhunter4e on youtube and watch his videos on how to make a wrist sling out of paracord. But all you really need is a piece of leather or rope or something like that

I don't use one but I've had people tell me the same. I use an open grip but lightly touch my finger and thumb once I'm set.
Ill hold my bow on target for a couple of seconds after and watch it hit through the site.

I use one that I made don't know if I really need it but it helps me feel more secure shooting at low and high angles.

It completely depends....if you are shooting well then fine. I shot with them and now don't. I find its just one less thing I have to deal with when a deer is coming in. Sometimes hard to slid a gloved hand in the loop while watching the deer. Never had an issue unless the angle is really steep. I then just barely touch the riser with my finger tips. Got this from Winke, Midwest Whitetails, and I think he is right...but each his own. No worries either way.

I haven't shot with a wrist sling in years and haven't had any issues. I ditched it for the same reason as WW1 - just another thing to mess with when the deer is coming in. Trying to slide my hand through a sling with a glove and heavy jacket on was too much of a pain so I took it off and never looked back.

i dont shoot one. i did with my parker but when i bought mu used bowtech it didnt have one and never got one for it and didnt get one when i bought my ballistic. my gf shoots a craze and she thought she needed one cause she was always scared of droping it especaly now with the stabilizer we got for it. it just makes her more comforatlble and one less thing she has to worry about when the shot counts and vice versa like justin said its one less thing to worry about trying to get your hand threw it when the shot counts.

it wont hurt to try if you dont like it take it off its all about personal preferance as long as you are following threw with your shot.

I think it is a preference thing more than anything. If your happy with how your shooting now then why mess with it. On the other hand try one out an you might really like it.

Listen to your father in law cause if the bow does slip/jump outta your hand you'll wish you had.

Most hunting bows have parallel limbs nowadays and the forward jump is almost completey eliminated. Target shooters still prefer to feel the jump because it offers a lot of feedback to the shooter about what might be going on with a shot (right or wrong) they need a sling.

I use one but don't feel I "need" it but I can't imagine shooting downhill at a deer from a stand without one.

I have considered taking it off because they can be a distraction when the deer is coming in but it is only there to keep the bow from falling so I have it real loose.

I actually haven't put mine on yet from the bow switch and I shoot fine without it but when I climb the tree this fall, I will have it on.

I use one but i keep it very loose so my hand can easily slide in and out with or without a glove. I just think its a little extra peace of mind for myself that i don't drop my bow. Good Luck.

I have one for the peace of mind in the stand and that ain't cause the bow will jump, its because I'm not perfect. OOPS!! goes the bow.

I have one and i could never take it off. I don't think it has improved my shooting but it does give me a sense of security.

Hey all, I just finished making mine. I'll take pictures tomorrow after the dye dries and I mount it on my bow. Thanks for all your help!
