Last night was a good session, albeit a little too late in the evening. The sun set a little faster than I thought and I only got about 15 minutes. I have found that my shoulder got a little sore, so either my form has been way off or I haven't shot for a while. I'll say it is more than likely the former. Not sure how night two will go. Apparently I had a small child get into some two stroke oil this afternoon. Can't wait to hear the story!
Night two of shooting was a good night. I readjusted my anchor point from the string on my cheek to the tip of my nose and it really seemed to help. No shooting tonight die to the weather rolling through.
Marshall is going to go talk to the rancher about access to his land for the season today. Hope it works out for us!
I have a little work to do as far as the phone scope mount. I borrowed one from a co-worker and it's a little too big for my scope. I finally removed the camo tape from the scope and found that it has been discontinued. Interesting.
No go on the ranch we were trying to get access to. They decided to leader it out the year. We're going to see about coming in over the top. It'll be about a 3 mile pack in. If we pack in, we'll more than likely bone out a harvest, if we get one. Marshall said he wants at least a 24" buck this year.
If you look carefully, you can see a doe butt on the ridge in the foreground on this picture Here's some pictures I took with my phone this morning
View attachment 49448 Here is where we walked. The flag is where we started the tracker (We really started at the blue dot at the end), the diamonds were obstacles, circles are encounters, stands are where we would set up to scope, and the camp is where we thought of setting up a camp. There is a spot down at the bottom of the draw where we'd like to put a trail cam. We are in the process of talking my father in law into letting us use his Rhino. We found a road that would take us up by where we had our first encounter. If we got the Rhino, we would set up camp down in the campground area below and drive up every morning/evening.
Started week 2 of shooting. Sighted in at 20 yards after 12 shots. Feels good to shoot after going scouting this weekend. Hunt Hard. Pray Harder.
I shot last night at 30 yards and would have harvested a deer. I do plan on shooting this weekend, but I also plan on putting my yardage markers into the ground so I can mow over it in the spring (and fall this year) I don't think I'll actually get out to the mountains this weekend.
Good news on the scouting front. Our contact for the ranch says if there are does there now, they bucks will be there during the late season. I think we have truly found a nice spot. I started installing my yardage markers on my range last night. They start at 5 yards and go to 90 yards, increasing in 5 yard increments through 30 yards. We won't shoot past 60 this year, but it's possible to go out to 90 now.
That is good news! I've really come to love practicing at those extreme ranges. It really makes you polish up your form. Plus the thought of losing arrows get's my heart pumping
I'm being told that mule deer requires a longer distance. I'm looking to prove that wrong this year, but (hopefully) I will upgrade to the Trophy Ridge React One next spring and will want to shoot out that far for practice. Sent from my iPhone 4s using Tapatalk
We have added a trail camera to our set up. Marshall bought a Moultrie M-880 yesterday at Cabela's. I am looking at taking an early mining trip in mid to late September and seeing how long it takes me to walk in and possible clear some trails. Sent from my iPhone 4s using Tapatalk
Been super busy with home improvement. One of my coworkers sent me some pictures of bucks they were chasing during the early season that I'll post later. Sent from my iPhone 4s using Tapatalk
Here is those pictures I was talking about. These guys are beautiful, but unfortunately in another hunting unit. Hopefully there's a couple guys of this caliber in my spot come November.
Haven't been updating the thread like I would like to, but I'm not really doing much. Work, home improvement and church activities are getting ready to kick back up. I do plan on going to my spot in a couple of weeks, timing the walk up and clearing some walking lanes to make moving in and out that much easier. I will have camo and some scent killer going and see what I can see. This is the last weekend of the early archery season. I think there is a week in between early archery and muzzleloader, so hopefully the deer aren't moving around as much. Sent from my iPhone 4s using Tapatalk
