You're telling me that there is no elk hunting tread in this forum?!?!?!

Oh, well. I am new to bow hunting and I am sure I can learn a lot from the wealth of knowledge that i am sure resides on these pages. I plan on hunting deer and elk here in Colorado, but mostly want a shot at an elk...so delicious.

    Hello to all!

theres more deer spread out across the US so not many folks know what elk hunting is b/c they dont have elk in the south or most of the northeast its mainly a western sport but we got some elk restoration going on in va,nc,ky, i think wva is going towards it too! they are beautiful majestic animals i would love to see them repopulate in the south

I have heard rumors that some states are trying to reintroduce elk, I think that is great! I grew up hunting deer and it has been great, but since I started hunting elk about 5 years ago deer hunting just isn't the same.

KY and PA both have elk herds that are doing fairly well. Some of the KY elk are filtering over into Tennessee, NC, and Virginia. I haven't yet heard of WV re-introducing any, but that may also be a possibility. We have a thread that is "Sticky'd" that is regarding an elk hunt which may land as many as 15-20 people in central Colorado in mid-late September for an elk hunt.

I agree, they are a majestic animal that tastes wonderful, that is part of why I'll be in the Rocky's again this fall trying to arrow one......:tu:

If you're seriously looking for a LOAD of elk knowledge, I encourage you to check out Bowsite.com, as it seems to be the forum on line with the most experienced WESTERN hunters, and there is a sub-forum dedicated to ELK specifically over there. Not an plug for the site by any means, but if a guy wants ELK INFO, it's probably the best place I've found specifically for elk. I know there are a few of us here who lurk and occasionally post over there as well.

Thanks for the info. I actually looked at that site before this one, but man they need to get a new web manager. That site is a mess, I am sure the people are first rate, but not sure about the forums. I do a little I.T. work and I just hate a messy website. I was much more impressed by bowhunting.com, well done guys!

There's three threads with elk in the title just on the first page of this forum. How did you not see them?

    +1.

You'll find that most of the guys on the site and midwest, southern, or easterners. A lot of whitetail guys. Like OHbowhntr said, BOWSITE is your best bet for elk help

Actually TN and NC have programs to reintronduce elk into the state. Both states are about 10 years into their program with TN opening up elk hunting last year.

Just got back from my neighbor's house a few minutes ago, letting our boys play together as we used Google Earth to look at where we're camping in Colorado and looking at the areas we'll be hunting. :nana:

    Greg,
Check out Acme Mapper ( http://mapper.acme.com/?ll=39.46526....46526,-106.34697,4.3 km N of Mount Powell CO ), it uses Google Earth, USGS, Mytopo altogether so you can pan in and out of spots, get an aerial or topo view of an area, etc. I use it quite regularly when looking at different places to hunt, hike, etc.... :tu:

Yeah, since my first post I have found a couple of elk related threads. I did a search for "elk" before my first post, but it had 0 returns. Oh well, the main point was to say HELLO to you all anyways!
