Where to begin! Got off work at this morning after working a 12 hr nightshift and headed to my spot. Pulled off the road, stripped down, and layered up with hunting clothes. Made my way to my tree and set my climber/pack down and proceeded to walk to my lookout point. This is just a spot where I can see if the trespasser is in his stand. As I'm walking I spook some deer. Get to the spot and I see trebark...the camo....a guy standing. OM MY GOD!!! My heart started PUMPING and I tried to sneak out. Got a little distance between us and called the warden. Me: "John, its Donnie. You gotta get down here to my spot. Trespasser is in his stand. Warden: I'm about an hour away but I'm on the way. Hung up and sprinted back to the truck with 30lbs on my back. Set my stand down and sprinted down the gravel road, down the paved road, and then on another gravel road. At least a mile and a half. I was trying to get to the spot where this guy may be parking. I didn't see a vehicle! BUMMER! Walking down the field now and hear something running....not a deer...must be the trespasser. I walk toward the noise and it stops. Binos in my hand....couldn't see him. I pointed my finger toward that area and said, "I got you!" No, I didn't see him...hell could have been anything but wait....it takes off again and I catch a glimpse. I run around the old farm house swimming through the briar patches and spot him. "HEY"! We converse and he denies everything. I asked why he ran and he said he saw a hunter on the logging road (me) and one in the field (me). Guess he couldn't believe how I got from point A to B so fast. Told him the warden had been called and we'd get it straightened out. See...his mommy rents this old house from my company but he does NOT have hunting rights. I actually told him that last Halloween day when he was with the "main" trespasser. I proceed to walk back to his stand to make sure he doesn't take the evidence. Spooked a VERY nice buck in the process. Warden calls and asks if hes in stand....no...just got done chasing him. He says he's still on the way. Well, heres the good part. I'm staking out his stand wondering where the hell the warden is. Head out to the truck and spot the ole warden driving by with a passenger inside his vehicle. Its the trespasser I've been after the whole time...not the one I chased. About an hour later....he comes back. Come to find out...this guy (passenger seat guy) and two of his buddies had just SHOT A DOE FROM THE ROAD WITH A 22 cal in broad daylight with my truck not 200 yards away. When the warden was driving in...he spotted this green truck leaving...green truck I had told him about previously. So he pulled them over and found the deer, a 22 rifle, 410, and bow. He confiscates all of it and gives them each 5 or 6 fines/tickets. No licenses, shooting from road, illegally killed deer, illegal rifle caliber, and trespassing. This was just pure dumb luck that he caught these guys since I had called about the other guy in stand. BUT this guy was the one I've been after the whole time or so I thought. Long story short (now I say that :D ) Warden and I go back to the crime scene where the doe was shot to look around. Go back to the other trespasser's stand, take it and the mineral licks. I get the illegal doe (warden tagged her for me) and he just called and said he caught the guy I chased and gave him about 5 tickets too. So I got a 2 for 1 today!!!:D I could not be happier!!!! Heading back out soon to actually hunt....for DEER.
Oh...warden called me back and told me the treestand trespasser said I "planted" the mineral licks there to frame him. :D I just laughed. Good stuff!!!!
Great story! I love catching trespassers. I usually just yell, scream, and swear a lot. Haven't resorted to calling the DNR or the cops yet. Oh wait, we did call the DNR last year. They set up on this guy who was trespassing, shooting deer after dark, over a corn pile, and waited to catch him in the act of actually shooting a deer so they had better charges to press. That never came, so they never did anything to him. What a waste of time that was. Glad your case turned out better!
