I was shocked as I wondered toward a favorite spot of mine and came upon some major storm damage from a while back. It was the first I knew of the damage. This is the highest elevated spot on my lease and it HAD some very big nasty pines in it. Some of the spots were so grown with pines it stayed kinda dark in there all day long. Sad part is some of the spots were major Turkey roost locations. I honestly think its going to make my paticular stand better in time. Im in a bottle neck pinch point with crop fields about a 1/4 mile behind be. Two old strip mine pits are on two sides of me with shear cliff drop off's funneling the Deer past me leading to the Previous Pine groves and bedding areas on both sides of them. NOW what im thinking is the bedding just got better and the browse is poking up all over where it once didnt grow because lack of light. The stand I have in a very Large pine got lucky,,all of the other large pines around it snapped off mid way up, felling the trees in such a manner that the Deer will have to filter past me on one side now instead of two. Bad thing again is now some of the areas are basicly impossable to walk through. It looks alot like the KY woods that got hit with the ice storm that Gri22ly hunts. Im actually looking forward to the change and refiguring out the Deer movements ;)
Look how open this looks,,,before you could hardly see through it.

I think my son did,,He had a ladder stand in there and we couldnt even get close to where it was. We will check when the deer ticks are gone.

looks nasty... like a a place a deer would want to bed, and a hen would want to nest. give that 5 years and you will have the results of a clear cut with all sorts of new sapling and early successional stage plants.

Im not out of the woods yet,,I have another hand on about 600 yards past this that I access from another direction. It also has alot of pines and is by far my best stand location during the Rut. I need to check on that next! I just hope it didnt get that far. The stand is in a lower level of the woods so I hope thats a good sign!

My uncle lives in KY where that ice storm went through a couple years ago in Muhlenburg County. He lost a couple of blinds and 2 stands I think. He spent most of the summer cutting out new lanes. If he wanted to get somewhere in his woods he had to take a chainsaw to get there. It's amazing what mother nature can do.

I feel your pain BC. I have 2 small woods I hunt in and one got really jacked up.

My cousin hunts a mile up the road and his spot got leveled by a tornado then a train wrecked about 75 yards away. He's pretty much screwed.

Best of luck with it Dan. It could very well turn into a better spot then before with all the new browse. Hopefully your other spot got spared. Looking forward to seeing how it turns out for you so keep us updated !!!
