Good luck, it sounds like you hurt him badly and hopefully he expires soon. If there are bubbles in the blood early I would say that is a very good sign.
Where you at in MN Krohboy? If you can see him, I'd be sitting there watching him. If at all possible, stalking from the downwind side. If you can see his head, you can move achingly slow when his head is down.
I'd watch him with the binos and see if he seems to be badly injured. How much blood did you find? The bubbles are definitely a good sign. If his head is still moving he may be going in and out of consciousness due to loss of blood. You could try stalking him from the downwind side if you can watch him or you can wait till morning and track him in the snow if he's able to get up.
Good advice on staying put and watching him; its the main reason I got to come back from CO and tell a story about killing an elk
Good luck Krohboy, I cannot wait to see pics of your deer. With cold temps setting in tonight that buck is going to be in a world of hurt and will expire. Good luck retrieving him tonight.
I too think that you're best off watching him until dark, unless he's dead. If you see any signs of life, WAIT "TIL MORNING. I watched a nice 12 pointer one time until dark that I liver shot. I knew that he was seriously hurt. I backed out and came back 4 hours later (9 PM) to find him still alive. I backed out until good light in the morning and found him dead right where I left him. It's usually better to wait.
I'd watch him as long as I could. Personally I wouldn't recommend trying to stalk him. Too many things can go wrong with not very good results. Wait until morning and he'll be laying there dead. Go in now and you're just opening a window for non recovery that doesn't need to be opened.
If you spotted him from a distance, laying down, there is a really good chance he's hit hard and won't get up. Watch him until dark, then quietly get the heck out of there until tomorrow morning. Go back to the same spot where you saw him from a distance and check. I bet there is a real good chance he'll be laying there for you to put a tag on. It's always best to "tippy toe" into a situation like this. Take your time, don't push him into the next county. If he was hit in the area you said he was, its a dead deer IMO.
Not arguing, but are you saying 18-24 hours on all high lung shots. I shoot high lung every chance I get and the deer drop the same as when I put it through the boiler...as for the above the lungs and below the spine, you can use the search engine to get better opinions than mine. As for the thread, do you have an update yet???
Well I had some things to deal with this morning. I did find time to look where I last saw him and all I found was a bed full of blood. I'm going to do a grid search of some thicker cover in the area after lunch. My hopes aren't high though.
Try to look for his tracks in the snow. That would be what I would look for first. Good luck think positive!!! Did you find your arrow or any pieces of it?
Krohboy, do you have a camera? Take some pics and post them up on here of your arrow, the bed "full" of blood, and soforth. Bring your bow in with you when you track and kill that buck. Follow his tracks.
My land is where every deer in the area winters. I have 200 or so deer makin tracks. I couldn't find a blood trail from the bed. The wind was causing the snow to drift over. I'll try to take pictures of the bed when I go back out. The bed had 2-3 inchs of thick blood seeped into the snow on the hit side of the deer, and on the back side of the bed the snow was a lighter red.
