Plus the organs dont sit the same in the cavity when theyre laying down compared to standing. It would probably turn out ok but i just dont trust my own ability yet.
No ethical shot present. The distance has nothing to do with it. The animal laying on its side changes the kill zone dramatically. Best to wait for this deer to stand up. No way I am taking that shot.
As a few others have mentioned, vital location isn't 100% known, therefore this would be an unethical shot in my mind. The doe would have to stand up for me to take the shot. I would proceed home after that, sharpen my knives and prepare a skillet for fresh backstraps!!
Not a chance. First I am probably still groggy from my nap, because that is about the only way that deer was able to get within 30 yards and lay down without me noticing and shooting while it is still standing. Second, there is no good shot. With the Qtr to angle the heart is protected and while laying down there is little chance of a double lung.
I never knew a deer's stomach was considered "the vitals"....? This is a terrible shot asking for a long overnight on a gutshot. Personally I'd get at draw, aim up, and bark to get her to stand up.
I'd kill the helloutta her..... ....vitals clearly open, totally relaxed animal, entrance wound would be at the bottom of the chest so she would bleed like a stuck hog. Heck yeah I'm slinging an arra What really matters is if you are confident in YOUR shooting skills. At 30 yards I could put one in her earhole.....so this is one that I would take if I was so inclined.
Yep. If it's a deer I want to shoot I'd much rather wait it out. Like the OP said, the deer is calm. No reason at the moment for her to haul out of there. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Not sure why anyone who was comfortable taking any 30yd shot would pass this up. There's no chance for jumping the string and she's completely broadside. You put one behind her elbow; that head is going to shred her heart and go right up into the lung on the other side. You miss a little left and you're still getting lung(s). Even if you don't get a pass thru, she will bleed out the bottom of her chest like a river. Doubt she would make it 20 yards. I shot a bedded buck halfway down a little draw with a slug gun a few years back; exact same situation (except I stumbled, er snuck up on him.) The slug took out top of his heart and shredded his lung. He never even got up. Granted, that was a gun but the angle was pretty much same as I can tell from the OPs pic.
If you miss the heart, you get one lung at best. That is, if you can blow through the sternum without deflection and plenty of penetration. Maybe on a doe? I bet you a steak dinner that I can draw and get her to stand up and give me a double lung shot. I like those odds MUCH better.
I have passed up EVERY 30 yard broadside shot on whitetails. But I would shoot this bedded doe. There's plenty of vitals, no more bone obstruction than a broadside shot and most importantly, she won't drop at the shot. I shot a bedded wild hog that was laying a bit like this, only with it's back to me. My arrow came out the sternum. Hog went about 20 yards.
Maybe I'll adapt as I get older but I just don't shoot in abnormal situations(anything but broadside or slight quartering) or even sitting down. Bad shots sometimes happen and that is hard enough for me to live with but alot more so if I felt I "pushed it."
Christine, there is WAY more bone obstruction at the bottom of the chest than on a broadside shot. No comparison really. There is a reason that I have to use a bone saw to split the chest on a big buck. If you are pushing enough KE to blast through it without fear of deflection, maybe? But, its still a single lung hit on a pretty high percentage of the hits. Most of us have seen what can happen on a single lung hit. Not good.
Nope. You can easily get both lungs the way she is laying. The actual sternum bone on a whitetail doe is pretty small. And the way she's laying you'd be hitting too low if you hit her square in the sternum anyhow. But go ahead, argue anatomy and physiology with me.
You know I would never argue with you. You would always win, just like now. I originally looked at the photo earlier on my phone and have to admit that I thought the bottom of her chest was rotated further than it is, now that I look again on the big screen I can see your point. I'm still not taking the shot, but only because I am ultra-conservative on shot selection. Fling away kids!!
Everyone is scared of the ethics police. That's a easy kill all day, every day and twice on Sunday's. I didn't realize so many hunters were sporting female parts. The Internet is funny thing, lol ...10 bucks says half you naysayers would be slinging arrows and making up stories about it later.
I probably would have shot before it bedded Calm, unaware deer. I believe I'm shooting. Her vitals are tilted, but it's no different in my eyes than shooting down through them. It's just headed slightly up instead. Entry is the low wound too.
Same for me. Too much risk in a single lung hit or deflection with a bow. If I had my -06 in hand I'd put the cross hairs between the eyes and go boom.
I assumed it wasn't up here, being that it looks like there's soil in the picture. It's a dead WI deer
