Given that situation, I would probably go for it. I live 12 hours from my extended family, and while it sucks not being able to see them more than 10-12 days a year, it makes you appreciate them more I think. But I wish they were closer

I couldn't do it, but given your situation it actually makes sense.

You forgot to mention the added bonus of living much closer to yours truly. That should make anyone want to move across the country. :D

That would be a tuff one. I had planned on moving close to my IL property after I retire in a couple years. Now I'm not sure I want to live in that state, even out in the country where I would be. It's just too screwed up. And no you couldn't pay me enough to live near and work in Chicago.

I might just be moving out West someplace in a couple years instead.

If the situation was right maybe. A lot goes into it, like where and all for me. I need to be in an area I can hunt and have the time off to hunt, but if all that was in line and the girl was willing, I would be all in. If it was to a crappy area or having to work to much or anything like that, I dont think I could.

Depends on the location, but yes.

Chicago, while a great city, would not be one of those locations. I would have to making ballin' money to move to Chicago. Like downtown loft and eat at Alinea every night ballin' money.

I actually want to move out west after school in pursuit of a firefighting job and to work on forest fires. possibly becoming a smoke jumper.

Anything that would double your pay has to be seriously considered.

I have 3 kids and I'm self employed so I personally would not move, but if I didn't have kids and could double my pay, I would move anywhere in the US for a short-term stint.

I couldn't do it. Everything I love is here in Missouri. Family, friends, my farm, my sports venues...I moved right of college to another state and was back within 4 months.

Depends. I know folks that moved to make more money, but were miserable in the new location. Will the spouse like it?

    Happy wife= happy life..

I plan to do just that... only further.

I plan to move to Anchorage, Alaska as soon as I graduate, come hell or high water. Pay is better up there, Hunting is 100 x better, Fishing is better, Weather is better (I HATE muggy summers of the Southeast). I have some pretty serious bowhunting ambitions on my bucket list, and I know that they wouldn't be possible either time wise or economically if I didn't live in Alaska. As a resident I can bow hunt for the following without paying a guide tens of thousands of dollars (as you would have to as a non resident): Black Bear, Brown Bear, Grizzly Bear, Elk, Caribou, Moose, Blacktail Deer, Wolves, Dall Sheep, Mountain Goat, Musk Ox, and even Bison (if lucky enough to draw). That list for me is only achievable by moving there.

The current plan is to work 4-6 years up there and earn enough to pay off all student loans and have enough to buy a house outright. At that point, I'll reassess what is important in my life and where I want to live from there. If I earn a career through the IHS, they have an extremely early retirement option at 20 years that I would have to consider in future moves (being 1/4 the way there already). Luckily, the US Public Health Services have a multitude of branches to work at out west.

If it wasn't Alaska, my next choices are Northern New Mexico, Northern Arizona, Colorado, or Montana.

As for friends and family, the truly close ones will come visit. My grandparents have passed on and the only family I am close with are my parents and sister. I have no ties to my hometown other than the friends I grew up with (half of which have moved away themselves). I have already moved 2 states away to finish up my post grad schooling. My parents should both be fully retired within 4-5 years and plan to spend most of their time traveling so living close to my hometown wouldn't afford me that much time with them in the first place.

If you will enjoy the work, the job you do, then all the other non-job stuff will be bearable. If you hate going to work every day then all the other non-job stuff will be unbearable.

I could never live In a city (specially Chicago) regardless of the pay. I'd get a place outside of the city If It was truly worth It. Back to the question you asked, I'd move In a heartbeat but location would be the deciding factor In doing so.

Best of luck Matt In whatever you decide to do.

    Matt,

I need someone to hunt my farm - you are welcome if you do move! lol

Short term gig, for sure. I think it is only responsible to truly consider something that doubles your pay. The fact your wife wouldn't work, is a major plus. I'd try it!

I would have no issue with it, after 16 years in the Army I don't really have any roots anywhere these days. I've been looking at jobs in Illinois for when I retire from the Army and have seen a few pop up for helicopter pilots in Rockford, IL. Anyone have any info on the Rockford area?

For a job I really love... in a place I really enjoy living and where there isn't any trouble? Absotively! Does that place exist? Hmmm, I wonder. "A place where there isn't any trouble. Do you suppose there is such a place, Toto? There must be. It's not a place you can get to by a boat or a train. It's far, far away. Behind the moon, beyond the rain... Somewhere over the rainbow."

One thing I do know... happiness isn't a place... a job can't make you happy.... My family makes me happy. If I can't do the things I enjoy most... I will find something else but I only get one family.
