Ok so how many of you have gone longer than 8 years without shooting a deer or longer? Would you quit or give up bow hunting? My friend has been hunting for 14 years and has never had a chance at even a doe our public land sucks in illinois its the worst out of any state but we've walked and scouted the whole properties many many times barely any deer sign and no buck signs any where in 4 properties all over 2000 acres. We've searched for leases and permission for 8 years now and nothing no one wants to give permission or Lease out here at all. So all the hunting gear and bows are going to be up forsale I think being its Time to quit hunting I thought people in the hunting community were alot different and kinda bonded together I guess not there all as*hol** in our book only looking out for each other never giving a helping hand or a chance to anyone. A single father of 3 kids can't drive hours to go hunt and can't spend countless dollars on a lease when were doing this to try to feed our familys so what's a guy to do but quit deer hunting.

Honestly, if you've been hunting 8 and 14 years without seeing a doe and you claim you're trying to feed your family, then it's way past time to "hang it up". At this point you've likely spent more than enough on time, tags and equipment to go a long ways towards feeding your families. Guys take public land deer all the time there, if you're both that poor at hunting then you'll get far more enjoyment playing pool or bowling as a hobby. Who knows with 8-14 years of practice maybe you can get good enough to make some extra cash.

Do not blame the hunting community for the fact that you can not get access to free places to hunt.

14 years is a long time. I went a good 4 or 5 years bow hunting before I shot anything and that's because during those first years I was clueless as to what I was doing. I'm lucky though that I have a few hundred acres of private land that I can hunt. I don't think other hunters are a-holes, but the days of just knocking on someone's door and them letting you hunt there for free are for the most part over.

I went a very very long time hunting on public land without seeing it taking an animal. Problem there was it was so over populated with hunters, any deer that did come through were on a full panicked run. Pretty disappointing hunts... constantly. I had thought about hanging it up. But quitting isnt me, so i decided my situation needed to change if i wanted my chances to change. So i did something to change it rather than sit around&complain about it. Any change starts with you making the decision to change it. Time to decide whats important.

Why do you first start out mentioning that your friend hasn't killed a deer, then you later include yourself in the story? If two of you guys can't kill a deer, any deer, on 2000 acres of land in that span of time, you both need to find a different approach to feeding your families. I hunt on some crappy Public land, but I'm presented with shot opportunities (maybe just a doe) every year. It's just a matter of putting in enough time on stand.

Lots of landowners don't want to have to worry about liability or just having people on their property. I didn't hunt for years because I was too busy coaching football and people would ask to hunt my land and I would say no and did get called an ******* but not certain if that was about hunting my land or not. My point is many people just don't want strangers on their property. Kinda bugs me when somebody leases a property or has permission to hunt a farm and call it their farm, couple hundred or thousand $ a year does not make it yours.

Really? What kind of non-native trees did they kill out?

The way he talks, he sounds like a 12 year old! Seriously, how can you be concerned about your ability to feed your family when you talk about offering THOUSANDS of dollars to some property owner to hunt???? Take that money and start feeding your family! Honestly, you're the one who sounds like an A-hole.
