Would you give up a little KE for a bit more speed?

You'd be just a touch stiff, but you're far better stiff than weak.....:thumb: As I said above, something around 29" would spine near perfect, too slightly stiff, but you want slightly stiff if shooting fixed blade broadheads....:tu:

I am not sure where Greg gets his inserts but I usually get them from here:

Thank You! These will affect your spine right? I shoot an 09 BlackIce with a 28.5'' draw @ 61lbs. I have some Maxima 250s with 3 4'' feathers @ 27.75'' with 100gr heads. Can I add 50grs up front and be ok?

Your setup looks pretty good the way it is. Adding a 50 grain insert would probably weaken the spine too much. Now, if you didn't mind turning your DW down to about 57 then you could add the 50 grain insert, The KE would stay about the same but you gain 40 grains of arrow weight (to 402) and your FOC jumps up to 15.36%(from 11.83%). You will lose about 15fps (269 down to 254 fps).

So, change nothing and you are just fine with a very good setup or add the 50 grain insert, turn down the DW and you are still fine with a very good setup. Just depends on if you want to try a bit slower and heavier or stay with a bit faster and lighter. Your call.

I played around with a spine calculator a couple of months ago and decided on 400 spine arrows cut at 30.5 inches with a recurve bow of 55#'s @ 28 inches. Well I thought I tuned my arrows and shot them pretty darn good for about a month.

Then about two weeks ago my shot started to change with the recurve after 4 months of shooting it. I started to cant the bow slightly and bend my waist over forward slightly. It felt more natural for me. That changed my shooting for the better initially then I started shooting a bit more erratically. Well a couple of days ago I played around with my brace height by increasing it and I started shooting a tad bit better. Then I began noticing I was shooting consistently off to the left when my shots would go bad. I was off by around 1 inch to the left. Tonight I added 50 more grains up front and that brought the front of my arrow up to a total of 220 grains. My arrows started to fly straighter, my bow quieted down, and my arrows began hitting the mark. My total arrow weight is around 505-515 grains. I am going to continue testing out my shooting tomorrow with the set-up, but after a few shots outside and some inside the garage, it feels good. I believe my FOC is around 18%-19%.

If that's truly what It Is that's about perfect!! Mine Is a tad less then that at about 17% If I remember correctly. I wish I could get mine higher but can't unless I shorten my arrows up and add more weight. I won't do that with these arrows, It's a pain getting these brass Inserts out. Dr Ashby says FOC don't start making much of a difference until It hits that 19% range In FOC. Way to get It there Brett!!!

You've come a long way Brett with experimenting with your arrow set ups and such. Well done!! :tu:

This is what the calculator is showing...Between the broadhead and the insert I have 220 grains up front.

Thanks! I really don't care for a light arrow to much anymore for hunting and with most my shots being within 20 yards I don't care about speed.

I have an almost identical setup, 58# DW, 405grain arrow, 15% FOC using a 50 grain brass insert. I used it so I could use a 100 grain NAP Bloodrunner. Would have had a clean passthrough at about 10 yards but the arrow hit the offside leg and shattered the bone. The deer was down inside of 30 yards. Good luck with it. Let us know how it performs for you.
