To put this into perspective, the Royals have not even made the playoffs since 1985, and in that stretch, they have had 1 singe season above .500. Willing only 83 games and still finishing 3rd in their own division. It wouldn't matter who you had sitting in the GM chair, we would end up with the same results because the only commitment by ownership is to profit, not win. Which they actually do quite well because Royals fans are so loyal.
I am sure there are other teams that would have loved to win the world series teams. Did the Pohlads cry that they could not sign free agents with the Metrodome...yes. Did they say they would be able to bring in top free agents if they got a new stadium...yes. They have the new stadium, the place is packed every night and they are one of the richest owners in baseball, did they bring in top free agents like they promised when asking for a stadium...no!
Does he want to win more than other GM's? Spend money?? Pretty sure most teams spend similar amounts due to the salary cap. He was a sucessful owner when he let real football people run/coach the team. Jimmie Johnson comes to mind. Jerry thinks he can do it all between talent evaluating to coaching from the box.
x2 Doesn't look any better this year with this Epstein fella either. Though I do know part of the problem is the money the Ricketts family has to put into upgrading Wrigley Field. Took a college class on "Baseball and American Culture", the professor had Pete Ricketts come in and discuss the business side of things concerning their purchase of the team. During the question and answer section he was asked about free agent signings, he said with some of the existing contracts and all the money being put into upgrading the facilities for the players it would be difficult for a while.
