NO I know, I love Junior...wish he hadn't damaged his one side in velvet and been the pure clean 8 he'd been for years...but alas, he was mature and I was like a kid in a candy shop with pops recovering him!

Tell me he did at least have a knife on him? I tried in the past to be a mentor and facilitate others hunting I guess I am not suited for the job. Then again gut shot button bucks, and showing up needing to borrow a release and spare arrows rubs me the wrong way. That and a whiner that complained of not seeing the deer while in the stand that he saw on trail camera, and was serious about it.

Well that is a bonus. I like you don't want people trampling all over a complex tracking scene, and you also knew where to look for where that buck would have probably gone based on cover, most do not ever learn that, no blood = lost deer.

Great job on being a mentor. Even better job on the track!
Congrats to him for getting that buck...even though he didn't listen! His first it's quite possibly a buck of a lifetime! I know it would be for me!

YES! I had to tell him twice to stop walking over the blood, what very little was there, finally I just told him to stop moving altogether and had him just stand at the last blood each time as I tracked. lol But all in all I think he has learned a fair amount this fall.

Oh man can I relate...neighbor stuck a local stud 8....terrible shot, arrow told me graze but we searched anyways. Bloodhound pops is finding a spec here and there for like 100 yards but the neighbor and his buddy were the just search ahead type.....smh (never did find deer and I would bet the thing was just pissed and not even in much pain and is fine)

There is actually a lil more to that. lol We had also agreed NO SHOTS OVER 20 YDS PERIOD! Well, he shot at that buck twice last night. The first shot the deer was closer to 30 than 20 and he clean missed. He did use a bit of info I gave him following the miss and used the grunt call I got for him last weekend and was able to grunt the buck back into less than 10 yds when he took the second shot. So...... lmao

I do have a hard time in listening to a some new hunters, I know I made more than my fair share of mistakes thru the years but I am amazed how people can make a stupid mistake a complete failure in judgement and execution and be so damn fast to forgive themselves and move on to another deer.

A big part of it sometimes is the lack of caring. To some people hunting isn't something their invested in it is just something to do.

I take somewhat of a different approach with new bow hunters. I tell them to take any good shot that they have regardless of buck age or if it's a doe. Worry about becoming proficient first and then worry about shooting a big one. My opinion is that you just cannot become proficient with a bow from tree on a live animal by doing anything other than shooting live game from the tree.

He was welcome to shoot a doe... kinda a really silly thing to do in mid Nov though. Had he shot one of the does he had under his stand yesterday afternoon he may very well have not had this buck show up. Additionally we know what is running around and we had an agreement on what bucks are far game and what is not. If he wants to go shoot a fork he can go hunt some public land or something. There is plenty nearby. If he wants to share a property with me then he will need to follow some rules.... pretty simple really, and I would have to say it worked out just fine for him.

Or... he can shoot some squirrels... which ever lmao
