Okay, here's the story. Walked to my stand in waste high grass with heavy dew. I am soaked and freezing. At 6:15 4 big does walked out... not a yearling with them... weird. I stood up to shoot what appeared to be the biggest and closest. I couldn't get my bow back... no matter how hard I tried. That's never happened before. They finally ran off as I pulled the 5th time and finally got it to break over. I started trying to warm up... stretch... pull... stretch pull some more and finally got loosened up. 5 minutes later, I look down and this 8 point just walks out and starts meandering down a trial where I had drug some "Evercalm" yesterday. He gives me the broadside and I shoot just below the shoulder blade and he runs off as if nothing has happened except he is spooked. He runs out in the field and stands there... acts like he is going to come back in and finally turns and walks into a thicket. I give it a few minutes, get down quietly and look for my arrow. Nothing... no blood... no arrow... no nothing. Now, I had bought some "Outback Safari 125" heads last year and thought I would give them a try. Man; they shoot good! But no blood... are you kidding me? So I swing a big circle around where I know he went and as I was walking through a little row of trees, a huge buck jumps up (about 150 yards from where I last saw my buck) and ran all the way across the field 4-500 yards easy. He looks fine. I go on to the house... make some coffee, check the clock... watch Sportcenter, check the clock... eat an apple, check the clock... etc. for two hours. I ease back to the spot where he stood, hoping to find some blood... nothing. I look for my arrow some more... nothing. I look for some blood some more... nothing. What now... do I post the thread of shame on BH.Com or follow my own advice. So I wait some more... then I begin walking down wind with my nose to the air and I swear I thought I smelled a dead deer in the thicket. I eased in and started looking for blood and easing a long and finally got down on my hands and knees and look in the thicket and I saw a buck laying on his back... dirt napping. My arrow hit exactly where I aimed, just below the back edge of the shoulder blade and passed through the lungs and out the belly pulling a load of fat through the exit wound and stopping the hole up completely. There was zero blood. I am so glad I followed my advice to back out, wait, move in slow and look ahead for my deer. Then... 1 mile in a wheel barrow, through waste high grass... whew!
LOL... I took them off and put my Muzzy 125s back on. Check this out... over one inch thick fat layer when I butchered it... yes I am done. This is the wad of fat stopping up the exit wound. I think the blade may not have been quite sharp enough. I should have been a little more broadside maybe for the down angle I was shooting; about 8 yards from about 22 feet.
Congrats! I had hit a buck just like that a few years ago. Dead 100yds away, but not a spec of blood to be found between where I shot and him...it was all internal.
I've never seen one plugged with fat as much as yours. I have had some fat in exit holes, and a couple times intestines plugged up exit holes completely. Pretty interesting how much fat you had.
