How accurate is the calorie's burned counter on the treadmill. Is it bad to take my whey shake around 10 at night. I do not get to run until about 9 or later, depending on when we put our little girl to bed. I run, shower and then make my shake...water, blueberries and powder (100)calories.
I don't trust the counters, each persons metabolism is different to begin with. I take whey after I work out because it is a fast digesting protein, so the muscles get the protein quickly. Before I go to bed I take casein protein, it digests much more slowly so it feeds your muscles while you sleep. After running (or before I run if I'm running early in the a.m.) I take Accelerade. It focuses more on replenishing used carbs, and has some protein thrown in to help fight against muscle breakdown. http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/end/accelerade.html But to answer your question, there is never a bad time to take whey, most people don't get enough protein as it is.
Not very accurate, but it will give you a nice estimation. It's all about the heartrate. Example: I would not burn as many calories running 3 miles at an 8 min pace b/c that is relatively easy for me. Now someone who isn't accustomed to running that many miles at that pace, would burn much more calories, b/c their heartrate would be much higher during that run, thus burn more calories. I really don't see why you are drinking a protein shake after you run, but I guess it couldn't hurt. Really need a recovery drink after a run moreso than a protein shake.
If I worked out that late it would be very difficult for me to sleep. I hear you though Michael about getting the kids to sleep before working out. I have three small ones so I have my work cut out for me. Many times I am pushing it at 8pm to get a workout. Other times like today I just try to involve them with my workout. I took them out on some nature trails while I sped walked/jogged while carrying my baby on my back. In fact I probably involved them in at least 50% of my workouts. Also, I would say the treadmill estimations are relatively accurate. Each person burns calories a little different based on how their body responds to the total environment and type of workout. When I was riding my exercise bike a few months ago it was showing I was burning X amount of calories. However, I don't think I was burning as much as it said based on my weight loss or lack thereof. I had to switch over to running. I don't like to jog but I have to in order to be in the shape that I need. If I had a treadmill I would use one.
i dont like the cal counters but really unless i wanna spend some coin on a HR monitor thats all i got. so i use it and minus about 50-100cals from each workout. i make up for that with a lift on the back end of my day. (cardio-morn, lift-afternoon/evening) as far as the late night shake goes..... depends on what you are taking it for... muscle buliding? then should be ok, but i try not to take in any calories within 2hrs of bedtime....
I look at them as more of a motivator than a calorie counter, for me the more I see that little calorie counter move up, the more I want to run.
Very good point. As far as a shake that late, it depends what else you have eaten that day and when you go to bed. If you haven't eaten much, the body still needs fuel. If you have already consumed a good number of calories for the day and you still wanted a shake, I would definitely suggest having it with water.
