Everyone's window is different. For most, it is about 1 hour. During that time your body is rapidly absorbing nutrients to heal itself. If you down a small protein/carb drink on your way home from the gym and then eat within 90 minutes or so you are good Tony. No stress.
Pre i have a coffee straight up black and a protein bar on the way to gym, its 5:30 am hence the coffee and 35 mile drive! Post work out either a protein shake mixed with straight up water or a muscle milk! And several boiled eggs. Chocolate milk is a great recovery drink. I usually throw in a handfull of natural almonds to
After much research, I found a chocolate syrup that is not made with high fructose corn syrup and I will be using chocolate milk as a recovery drink ...cheap, as effective or MORE effective that powdered drinks and accessible ...
I once lifted with a former Mr. Illinois who was sponsored by Muscle tech and appeared in the how to section of Muscle and Fitness. His post workout meal generally was 2-3 Big Macs and a Chocolate Shake. The thing I have learned over the years is that there is no replacement for real food. My max in high school was 365# and I never took creatine or protein powders. My max when I used to train with power lifters was 545# and I never took protein powders or creatine. Building muscle requires protein and your body only digests 50-60 grams at most, so stay hungry my friend and eat often
I think it's hilarious guys who preach eating healthy foods without chemicals are the ones preaching taking a synthetically altered powdered drink mix. Especially the ones preaching per workout mixes, they are chock full of chemicals and substances linked to everything from cancer to hormonal imbalances... Want protein? Eat lean versions of it throughout the day. Make half of every meal plate veggies, as much of the other half as you can stand should be a lean protein and the last sliver can be carbs. Of course this is assuming you are working out for the health aspect of it (insurances reason for covering it), and not looking to destroy your body further by bulking up even more.
Good for you PT and its smart to focus on before and after workout nutrition. I have no energy to workout if I don't have something in my stomach. The protein powders and whey are great and the also make those "naked" protein drinks that are great and very filling that you can buy anywhere. When I first start into working out Ill limit my time at the gym to 30min and then I see how much I can get done in a 1/2 hour. It a great work out and you can't make an excuse of not having time because it only a half hour. Put on some headphones and just get into a zone a no chitchat with others. You only have 30min and the you walk out of the gym. I also try to go right after work on my way home. That way when I'm home I'm done for the day. Good luck. Ps. And don't tell others your working out. Wait till they tell you how you look better. It's a good boost to work for those sincere compliments. Also. Don't expect to many from your wife. The change will be much more gradual for her.
Good call. My son races bikes in college and the team has access to fitness coaches/trainers/dieticians/etc, etc., .....they use chocolate milk as a post work-out recovery drink. You can buy chocolate milk that does not have high fructose corn syrup and that is low in fat or fat-free. Protein shakes are not to be confused with creatine.........two different things.
Haha yes eating right is 100x better then drinking protein shakes 5x a day. With that said protein shakes are not a scam. I drink one every morning approximately 48g my other 160 g of proteins comes from lean meat, nuts, cottage cheese, eggs, etc. it all comes down to what your goals are
