If you can do dairy, 8 oz. of chocolate milk is great. Or a chocolate protein shake. I like NitroTech by Muscletech.
I normally eat a banana and a spoon full of peanut or my wife likes apple slices and almond butter.

Just use 100% whey protein. You can add glutamine and or creatine if you would like as well to that shake. Pre workout meal would depend if you are trying to gain or lose. post workout if when you should eat your biggest meal of the day. nutrient count will depend on if you are trying to gain or lose as well. pm me if you have any questions. I am an amatuer bodybuilder and am sponsored by a few companies.

I generally just eat a banana or a small meal prior to my work out (30 min to an hour). Post workout I mix a scoop of vanilla protein powder by GNC and a teaspoon of monohydrate creatine with 10-14oz of milk. I used to take a pre workout called Assult by muscle pharm. It gave me a good pump but that was mainly due to the caffeine and B vitamins.

If I have bananas/apples I'll eat one pre workout with my pre workout drank. Also take 5 g creatine mono pre. Post workout meal consist of cereal (kashi, honey bunches of oats, mini wheats), 2 scoops whey gold standard, maybe some Greek yogurt or more fruit depending on my macros. I look forward to my post workout every day.

Don't worry about those recovery shakes just get carbs / protein in!

Hook is right it's better to get your protein from whole foods, but I like my shake post it just completes my workout. Plus I don't wanna eat like three chicken breasts with my cereal !!

Chocolate milk is great for you after a workout and won't cost you $5 a glass!

I have had a tub of protein powder going on 9 months and it still isn't empty. The powders generally need to be taken while you are within 30 minutes of completing your workout or your liver filters most of it out. They also cause false positives for high cholesterol in some people. Grab some chocolate milk and eat some chicken or lean beef instead.

Three to four eggs and/or 3-4 tbsp of peanut butter, almond milk, and flax if doing a shake. Can't do Whey as I have a weird reaction to it.

This confuses me a bit ... doesn't that have high fructose corn syrup in it?

I am not looking for consuming high fructose corn syrup or transfats anymore ...ever ...

Your food all depends on what your goal is, are you looking to bulk or lose weight?? I used to be on a HIGH protein diet for bulking and my breakfast of choice was 6-8 egg whites, whole wheat toast with peanut butter and some sort of fruit. On the way to the gym I would drink some NO Xplode, mostly for the pump it gave from the caffeine, and immediately after working work out I would have 2 peanut butter sandwiches. As far as during a workout if you want food, some jerky or a protein bar definetly does the trick. I was seeing gains in no time.

As for whoever said protein shakes are a scam, he either has never tried them or was not using them correctly. I started out trying to go all natural, my squats started out at 200 pounds max but after about a year my max only went to 285. I then started a protein/creatine mixed drink and my max shot from 285 to 375 in 6 months.

For recovery nothing beats some ammino acids and a good long, slow paced run

    Water. Fruit. Lean Protein.

    OR

Just get a good workout drink with 10-15 grams of protein and 20-30 grams of carbohydrates and drink it after the workout. You will probably spend $1 a scoop if you use a protein/carb powder.
