I was just curious if anybody on here works from home. The company I work for has offered me the chance to work from home instead of coming in to the office every day. If you work from home was it tough not having coworkers around to talk to? Also was it tough to stay on task?
I had the chance to work from home on select days... Usually Fridays. Every job is different but for me it was great. Not being able to talk to coworkers was simple... Staying on task was a bit different. I would generally bust my *** in the morning and get most of my stuff done, and then just do the daily work as it came in. It is truly awesome to be able to watch TV while you work, or go take a break on your deck, etc.
I don't get to do it often but there are a few times a year when I have the opporunity to work at home for a day and I love it. I find that I'm a lot more focused on my work with fewer distractions from coworkers and other office "noise". Without being bothered every 2 minutes to help someone or answer a question I'm able to accomplish a lot more real work.
I work from home on occasion. I find that I am much, much more efficient. I'll get most of my work done in the morning, then take the afternoon "off" while checking e-mails and whatnot on occasion. When I'm in the office I have to stretch my projects out the whole 8 hours. At home I'm pretty determined to get them done ASAP. I don't care about talking to co-workers. Most days I shut my office door anyways.
I used to work from home exclusively and found it very hard not hunt, fish, kill woodchucks, etc on my property ...I suppose it depends on you and where your home is located...or both It wouldn't work for me...and I thought it would have
I work from home (1.5-2 days a week) when I am not traveling and I've been doing it for almost 8 years. I agree with the others about less distractions and being more efficient. Although you have to have a designated office not a laptop on the couch with the TV on. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I've done it and also manage a team of guys that are mixed between being in an office and working from home. For me personally, I get a ton of work done and it's easy for me to stay focused and on task. For the guys on my team that work from home, I see a mixed bag. Most of them do well, but I do have a handful of guys now and in the past where things just aren't working out well partially due to their lack of ability to focus when at home. I think it really comes down to personality type. I do try and avoid hiring guys now that are remote because the success rate is so much higher when they are in office and it also helps to build a strong office culture which is important IMHO.
I use to enjoy working from home when I could, but now with 2 little ones (3 & 1) in the house, there is less distraction at the office. Before the kids, I use to feel the other way around... I could get more done with less distractions from home. If I need to talk to coworkers or collaborate, we have tech solutions for that in our office - jabber (IM & desktop screen sharing - hey can you look at this please right quick?), in place and I can work with clients remotely from anywhere via bomgar. It kinda ridiculous, but most people that are just across the hall would rather IM or email than actually get their saggy butts up out of the chair and actually come talk face to face. maybe they're just anti-social like Hooker ... but it works out fine either way.
I've been working from home for the past 15 or so years. I've never even met the most of the people I work 'with'. I'll have the occasional motivation issues but by and large I do well. The more pressure the better. The only thing I have found annoying is that when you are working from home, a lot of people just think you're home all day waiting for something to do. Between some of my friends and some of the outdoor groups I was involved in, I was often asked/expected to be able to do stuff at the drop of a hat. I swear, some people would get offended if I said "I can't, I have to work". On the other hand, I could often go meet up with friends and be involved in the groups because I work from home. Lol
I don't think staying on task will be to much of an issue for me. I have a room in our house that we use as an office so I can seperate myself from the couch no problem. I don't really talk to many of my coworkers now face to face if anything we usually IM so missing the water cooler talk is not much of a problem either. I think the biggest change will be for my dog. She is not going to know what to do with herself when dad doesn't leave her in the morning like he usually does. LOL Looking forward to this for sure! plus the extra $150/mo I will save in fuel will be nice.
My work laptop lets me work from home as I can work from the office. Full network access. One problem with that is that if something goes bad at work on an evening or weekend I have the ability to fix work. It doesn't give me a very good excuse. It is nice if there is a snow day, or you are sick to be able to stay home and not miss a full day of work.
