I know a kid that is the perfect example of this. He got lost one time in a 100 acre woodlot surrounded by houses. He said he saw a TV show that said if you get lost, stay put and occasionally call for help, so that's what he did. After getting to know him I began to realize it's just that his IQ is in the single digits. I think that is the problem with a lot of the people you describe, they're stupid, so stupid in fact that they don't even realize that they're stupid. With all the technology these days so many people can't even function in real life, and it's only gonna get worse!
talking about the younsters bring all the new gadgets to hunting, I was out a couple weekends ago and I saw a (must ta been a greenhorn) with some kind of bow contraption, it had wheels and cables,,,,,, jeepers
At some point, if a hunter wants to go on a high country hunt or likewise, they must Lear and should learn woodsmanship, along with survival skills and throw in some emergency skills. Life begins at the end of your comfort zone. Just don't try it without knowledge.
Not sure stupid is the right word for all situations, but I would quickly substitute "lazy" in there. In the technological world of today many things are quick and easy and that tends to make us lazy overall. That's why the kid at the register can't make change if the digital display goes out on the cash register. Mother Nature doesn't care if your batteries went down, or if the snow or dense tree canopy blocks the GPS signal. If you can't find your way in to and out of the woods and take care of yourself while out and about then you are a prime candidate for a visit from Mr. Murphy. Ol' Murphy has feasted on the lazy (and stupid) for centuries.
Im new to the forum, but I can tell you that most people have lost their connection with the forest if they had it to begin with. The TV shows have ruined would be hunters in that at a young age they see these deer all of the advertising and they want instant gradification. Little work big results. Once a hunter learns to tune in to their senses and learn about the animals then they start to become a better hunter. Once a hunter thinks they know it all in the woods they end usually knowing nothing and forgetting everything.
This is actually something that I won't put the sole blame on the youth. A lot of it can be put on the 50-30 crowd, if they're not willing or able to teach their kids where are they supposed to learn it? Guarantee they would even less chance to apply it. Good luck convincing some parents from the burbs to let little jimmy go camping with Billy from school and his dad.
To be honest I am glad a lot of people do not favor the outdoors or the woods, less competition and more open space for me! Imagine if the majority of people liked hunting and the outdoors. There would be a tree stand on every third tree, and another fisherman within 10 feet of you, then how fun would it be? Let the people who don't want to go outside stay at home and play their video games and live off the grocery store. Their ignorance is my bliss!
