Guys/Gals - Did you see this news from WI DNR?
They announced there will no longer be a DOE-ONLY GUN hunt in October. The link is here:
    http://dnr.wi.gov/news/BreakingNews_Lookup.asp?id=2054

I couldn't be any more excited about this - every year our pepin county spot gets pounded by doe hunters for 4 days (the gun powder smell lasts for about 2 weeks...).

Personally, I think this is great - what do you think?

Well you can thank Gov. Walker for that, (but only that) He said he was gonna have the DNR go back to the trad gun hunt & eliminate the earn a buck theory. The DNR certainly wasn't going to do that on their own. I think it's awesome. It really sucked in Oct with that stupid 4 day doe hunt, & youth hunt back to back. Too much hunting pressure has put a serious dent in the herd in southern wi. You don't see nearly as many deer as say 5-10 yrs ago. Bout time the DNR did something right.

Interesting since didn't WI say they wanted to kill down the deer herd a year or two ago?

What do I think? It's the best news about Wisconsin deer hunting I've heard in years! It's about time.

As a archer this is great news but the slaughter will continue here in the CWD areas.

Also in the CWD zone where the slaughter will continue with the neighboring landowner. There is one that will not institute a QDM philosophy. They have the traditional "brown-its-down" mentality. I am happy for the hundred thousand other bow hunters in the state, though! Congrats!

I wish my state would do that. Us archers have to deal with early gun season, small game and fall turkey seasons for almost 4 out of 6 weeks.

First off i want to say I'm from Wisconsin southern boarder..So let me get this straight there won't be any gun hunting for October? If thats the case thats great news for me I love to bow hunt and by taking that gun season away would be a huge difference in hunting? So hopefully that is true can anyone fill me in more...Thanks

Congrats to the bowhunters in Wisconsin.
Years ago in Michigan it was a bowhunters dream, Season opener was Oct 1st and it was a great week to take off hunting, the fall colors were at their peak and in northern Mich you would have a good chance at a frosty morning and possably evean a light snow that week, there were no interruptions till gun season opened on the 15th of Nov and lasted till the 30th.
Now you have a youth season right befor the opener, a Special Doe Only around mid Oct and a Handicap season right after that.
Ha Haa! Buy the time the Rutt starts you can't drive a nail up a bucks azz with a 4 lb hammer in alot of places in Michigan.

Glad to hear it. I am just hoping that it puts less pressure on the rut. Gun hunting really slowed down October for us.

    Thanks,
    Neal

Of course it would happen that the first year in about 3 I won't be hunting you fellas great state they finally eliminate the earn-a-buck.

    Story of my life.

Congrats to some of you guys on putting the screws to the DNR. And to the DNR for actually listening.

Its a step in the right direction, but a far cry from straightening out the Wisconsin DNR. Walker needs to do more, and remember the sportsmans votes. From my understanding they also eliminated Earn-a-buck (EAB) Statewide except the CWD area too...
Now they need to end the slaughter in the CWD area and learn a little bit about managing wildlife. Age diversity rather than promoting shooting fawns and yearlings would be a big step... So would managing for what hunters want instead of making rules to punish hunters who don't have the same beliefs as the DNR...
We really need to take control of the WDNR away from the Governor and have the people vote in a person specifically to run the DNR. Every time we get a new gov. he fires the head of the DNR and puts a puppet there to accomplish his agendas. If we voted in the top of the DNR he or she would have to answer to our votes in he/she did not perform.
