Just an FYI to the many Wisconsin hunters. http://dnr.wi.gov/org/land/wildlife/regs/Deer10.pdf Looks like many of the proposed changes made it in the book. No does may be harvested in most of the northern units (which I support). That is a big change for northern bow hunters. The new rule reads as follows: Archery and gun antlerless deer carcass tags will not be valid in the following units: 7, 13, 28, 29A, 29B, 34, 35, 36, 37, 38, 39, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 49A, 52 and 52A. No bonus antlerless tags will be available in these units Also, here is the final DMU map.
Also, here is the anterless tag details and availibilty for the regular DMU zones: http://dnr.wi.gov/org/caer/cs/BonusAvailability.htm
I'm with you Brad, on the northern Unit where I hunt in Unit 43 where the numbers are seriously low up there. This past weekend I was up there for 5 days and 1 deer and 1 bear I had seen and I spent a good amount of time out in the woods.
The unit 43 area is where I have slated for the location of my future land purchase. I always thought of the Antigo area as being a great place to own some land and have a cabin. It's just far enough up north without being too far for weekend trip. Any chance the deer heard rebounds before they finally decide to control the wolfs? Do you think a few years of no anterless permits is going to be enough to make it respectable up there?
I see i'm stuck with EAB again since im in 54BCWD. Good thing to know since I'm not seeing any fawns and have seen twice as many bucks out feeding then does. Once again thank you DNR for screwing our herd up all because "CWD" is so bad.
It is a combination of things and honestly it started with the Hunters and all the free anterless permits we got. Then 2007-08 we had to late spring snow storms up there and that hurt deer survival with the bad winters already had. Right now from what the locals are telling me is that the bears are the biggest issue. I was told something I didnt know but that a bear can smell a fawn right after birth as most predators cant as it is part of the fawns defensive mechanism. As for the wolves they dont seem to be that much of a issue in the area I hunt east of Antigo. Their a couple big packs just to the North of Antigo the 3-4 packs out by Crandon and Mole lake area. Let me know where you are looking for land I may be able to get you some help up there. 262-206-8507. T
