My Son bowhunted this a.m. 12 below windchill and had a book 10 ruttin hard inside 40 yards and could not stop him. 1 hour ago he had a nice 8 on a hot doe and flipped the doe with a 300 gr. sabot out of my ML. Blew thru both shoulders. So much for foreplay. If G.Washington had these muskets the British would have been toast in 3 weeks. The again if the indians had compounds?
Second rut? Dream on. It has been a trickle rut most of the season. If it were a second rut it would not be happening for at least one week. estrous cycle about 28 days so do the math. Congratulations on the success either way.
You are either Charlie from DDH or really bad at math. The peak rut in Waupaca was and always has been near 11/7, 28 days from 11/7 would put us where right now? We have 1 DPSA so yes I saw one hot doe last week during 71 hours in a tree. My Son has a hot doe in 90 minutes this morning and a hot doe tonight in 1 hour. Define "trickle" how You wish. There are more does "tricklin" today then all last week.
OK so maybe like another hunter over the hill from you I have different data. Lockdown, second rut. So many hunters are fooled by all the media hype these days.
I shot a 5.5 year old buck 18" spread 4x4 on Nov 23 that was following a doe. So what makes that? First and a half rut? Tweener rut?
the rut was definetely weird this year, very sporatic by me. tonight i had a small buck chasing a doe fawn hard. on thanksgiving i shot a nice 8 point chasing a big mature doe. and our all knowing dnr said the rut would be totally over by the start of our rifle season(nov. 23)!haha
Waupaca is blessed to have the highest Dpsm in possibly the country so having a hot doe anyday from 10/20 till now is not hard to fathom when we hunt woodlots and ag to view this activity. Typically nobody would believe or comprehend the deer density. Waupaca was #1 in gun harvest again this year beating Marathon county which has twice the land mass. He is bowhunting the 10 in the am then heading into a heated tower at noon with dry powder and the Bennelli turkey choke. Hens and baldies catch hell tomorrow.
PSE man is correct. This is the time for the second rut. This second rut is particularly evident in areas with high deer densities. I have hunted areas in southern Wis and northern Ill and witnessed this rutting activity. In some areas there is even a third rut, mostly doe fawns being bred. It occurs around Jan 3rd or 4th. In my area, the land I own, there will be no second rut. we have hardly any does around here. What ever doe came into estrus the first time around was bred. No need for a second rut which is sad.
Maybe sue to the high DPSM there is something happening but most of the multiple breeding is in southern states due to weather conditions. during the rut here in North WI I can sit all day and have action. Come December all the does are bred or dead. In a rare instance where one might cycle or a fawn comes in for the first time a buck will breed no doubt just no all day action like Nov. Waupaca does have very high deer densities I know. Well, if you listen to some guys they say there are no deer in WI. But that is another thread.
My Son just dumped 4 baldies with the ML in 2 hours and had 47 come out of my 7 acre spruce planting into my winter rye/ptt plot. So that's 6.2 deer per acrex640 acres=3,968 DPSM.(62b is@75 dpsm per the DNR) Build it and they will come. Thermal bedding and winter rye/ptt.
in early season my leases bean field was on fire with 40+ deer an afternoon pounding it. but no other neighbor within 2 miles had beans and the corn wasnt ready yet. plus our area by marion and tigerton had no acorns this year. so all the deer within a mile were pounding this 50 acre field. when the beans went dry and the corn rippened i didnt see ****. luckily i shot my buck before this happened. now we have 120 acres of corn still standing and the deer are starting to reappear. in early season i saw tons of deer and all my neighbors thought the herd had died out. during the rut i thought the herd went south for the winter and my neighbors saw the deer. now i am seeing the deer again and my neighbors have given up. just like everything else in life you gotta be in the right place at the right time. but compared to 15 years ago i dont see half the deer i did then. and i hunt multiple areas. in fact i see more deer where i hunted by escanaba michigan. but that cant be, our dnr says we have 75 dpsm and their dnr says they have 30 dpsm in that area. huh.
3,968 DPSM? No way. Now who is bad at math? You are not including all the range in the DMU and what areas have no deer. The DNR takes that into account to arrive at their numbers. Oh, now I get it. You are joking.
