So far this winter we have had very cold temps but not much snow. I try and feed the deer each winter but don't usually get too put as much out as I would like because of the deep snow. Yesterday we went down and took advantage of being able to drive into the middle of the property and set up a big feeding site. I picked a spot where a small valley comes off a big valley and is surrounded by bedding areas. This spot in the woods is the most open so they can see if any coyotes are coming. We put out a large bail of 3rd cut alfalfa, 20 bushels of corn both whole corn and on the cob, 6 bushels of soy beans, 50 pounds of sunflower seeds, 100 pounds of minerals and a gallon of attractant to try and draw deer in from the neighbors as well Here are some of the pictures from yesterday setting it up.
My late season feeding is done in the spring. My 3.5 acres of standing soybeans usually gets hit pretty hard in January and February. I make sure that the Soybeans I plant have the highest shatter resistance available. I checked them this weekend and they are still holding strong. I used to put out corn, but I have quite doing that because it just seemed to grow Boone and Crockett Raccoon's.
I just finished building 2 feeders. Up until now I just put some corn out on the ground. But now I'm very much interested in keeping the deer healthy (and not on the neighbors property) so I built 2 wood& barn metal feeders. I'm putting out a 50/50 mix of corn & whitetail institute initiate in one feeder and corn & anilogics 365 in the other to see which the deer prefer
One of my friends went and checked the cameras on Saturday. There are a lot of deer using the pile he said. I only got one picture sent to me and it was shrunk. I am hoping to get the sd cards this weekend from him. He did say that you could tell almost all of the bucks that were coming in already shed. The best part and I hope I don't jinx myself, there was no coon pics
We can't legally feed deer in NY, in the winter otherwise ...takes some of the fun out of it....that said tent sure love a good corn pile.
