People feeding deer corn during winter is it harmful? I have heard it hurt their digestive system/ possibly resulting in death is this true? Also what would be another food source that you could feed them that wouldn't hurt 'em
The only thing i know is that corn is not very nutritional, though it does help deer get through winter.
Corn is actually very nutritious this time of year- lots of calories and lots of carbohydrates = lots of energy and fat to keep the body warm! A strict diet of nothing but corn can kill a deer as it is not very digestible and in many cases it takes more calories to break down the corn and digest than benefits gained.
What i was going for. IMO sometimes people make it TOO EASY for deer to eat, if that makes sense. Pour out 100lbs of corn a night and deer get on a pattern of eating said corn, and miss out on other nutrition they need.
I feed deer corn year round but I let the feeder stay empty for a few days before filling it back up. The feeder is empty about as much as there is corn it, that way the deer will not rely solely on the corn feeders.
