Hi guys and gals. Gotta ask this question that has probably been asked and answered on this site a million times. What is the strongest MPH sustained wind you guys would hunt in? Thanks for reading and answers, Glenn

Anything above 25 (like today here) is a no go, but generally 20 mph is the most I would deal with.

What kind of stand and what size tree?

Is it in a bottom or some leeward side?

I'll sit up to 25 in a ladder stand on a big tree. If its in some lee then I will do a hang on a smaller tree. Once it gets over 25 I'm more concerned about large branches falling. I hunt a peninsula and the deer consistently travel the leeward side even during strong winds.

No problem hunting in high winds. Done it many times.
I'll take a 30 mph wind over calm anyday.

I'm the exact opposite. I'll take calm every time. I rely on hearing the deer in my woods first, and with wind that's not going to happen. Often, by the time you see a deer it's already in bow range, because of it being so thick. I hate the wind while hunting! :hater: As to the OP's question, I won't hunt past 20mph wind.

When I hunt in Oklahoma, there have been times gust have been over 30 mph but I've found the deer moved better in windy conditions vs the calm.

I hate wind- I almost never see deer movement on windy sits; and I also depend more on my ears than my eyes unless the ground is wet. I actually spend a lot of time in the stand with my eyes closed (mostly on purpose) letting my ears do the work.

25 sustained would probably be my max if I hunted local; but I travel to hunt so if I'm at camp I'm hunting unless it's raining hard.

It seems like I always see more deer when there is 5-20 mph wind. I don't like when it is dead calm, its nice being able to hear deer coming but just seems like deer are on edge when its dead quiet and scent control is a lot harder.

Skip to about 20min 35 sec in this podcast to hear Mark Drury's thoughts on wind speed. I personally think Mark Drury is a genius when it comes to deer movement so I tend to believe a lot of what he says.

I love calm day's...5-10 mph winds are fine also. I think it has a lot to do with what "your" deer are used to in "your" pretculer area.

With 15+ mph winds in my area the deer hunker down and move very little.

I live in North Dakota where you say only gonna be ONLY a 10 mph wind today. So I have hunted in some windy conditions, I usually only check the wind direction the speed just makes me depressed haha

10-15 is my max, otherwise way too cold here in Wisconsin during hunting season.
